The 83/50 designation refers to the padlock body width of 1-57/64 inches, which is wider than the 83/45 body at 1-7/8 inches. The shackle diameter on the 83/50-300 S2 is 3/8 inch, compared to the 5/16-inch shackle on the 83/45 series. The wider body and larger shackle make the 83/50 the correct specification when the installation requires a heavier shackle gauge, a larger hasp staple opening, or chain links with a wider inside diameter than the 83/45 shackle can engage.
Both the 83/45 and 83/50 use the same Z-Bar mechanism, the same rekeyable cylinder design, and the same NANO PROTECT shackle treatment. What the Z-Bar and NANO PROTECT shackle provide on the 83/50-300 S2
The Z-Bar is an ABUS-patented mechanism built into the cylinder that switches the padlock between key-retaining and non-key-retaining operation within seconds. In key-retaining mode, the key stays in the cylinder until the shackle is closed, preventing the key from being removed from an open lock. In non-key-retaining mode, the key can be withdrawn at any point. Switching between the two modes requires no tools and is reversible at any time.
