Falcon Mortise Cylinders

Falcon mortise cylinders are the conventional pin tumbler cylinders manufactured by Allegion's Falcon brand for use in Falcon mortise locks, competitive mortise locks requiring Falcon-compatible cylinders, and specialty applications including the Falcon 1690 Series exit device. The cylinder length, cam type, keyway, and pin count must all match the specific lock housing the cylinder is installed into. Ordering a Falcon mortise cylinder requires knowing these four specifications before the order is placed. American Locksets is an authorized Allegion Falcon dealer stocking Falcon mortise cylinders across the 985, 986, 987 series and specialty variants with same-day shipping and free shipping on all orders over $300.

Falcon Mortise Cylinders: Length Series and Pin Configuration

The Falcon conventional mortise cylinder catalog uses a numeric series that directly identifies the cylinder body length. This is the most important specification decision because a cylinder that is too short will not extend through the door thickness correctly, and a cylinder that is too long creates protrusion past the escutcheon face.

The length series available at American Locksets:

  • 985 Series: 1-1/8 inch length, 5-pin or 6-pin. The most common length for standard commercial mortise locks on 1-3/4 inch doors.

  • 986 Series: 1-1/4 inch length, 5-pin or 6-pin. For applications requiring additional cylinder length beyond the 1-1/8 standard.

  • 987 Series: 1-3/8 inch length, 6-pin or 7-pin. For thicker doors and specific mortise lock applications.

Additional lengths including 988 (1-1/2 inch), 990 (1-3/4 inch), and 992 (2-inch) are available through Falcon and can be ordered by calling 877-471-4870.

Cam Types: Why the Cam Determines Lock Compatibility

The cam is the rotating driver at the tail end of the mortise cylinder that engages the lock case mechanism to retract the latchbolt or deadbolt. Falcon mortise cylinders are supplied with specific cam types based on the lock they are designed to operate. The cam part number is included in the full cylinder SKU when ordering. The three primary cam configurations stocked at American Locksets are:

Falcon MA Cam (5622-STD) for MA Series Mortise Locks

The Falcon 985 G G-Keyway 1-1/8 Inch Mortise Cylinder with 5622-STD cam is the standard cylinder for the Falcon MA Series mortise lock with sectional or Gala rose trim. The 5622-STD cam is the MA Series standard for all keyed functions except the MA381. The cam drives the lock case mechanism in the MA Series and must be ordered specifically for MA lock applications. This cylinder is also available in C keyway for Schlage-compatible systems using the 5620/5621-STD cam.

The Falcon 5622-STD MA Cam for Conventional Mortise Cylinders is also stocked as a standalone replacement cam for service situations where only the cam needs to be changed, not the full cylinder.

Falcon M Series Deadbolt Cam (09894-001) for Deadbolt Functions

The Falcon 985 G 09894/09897-001 1-1/8 Inch Mortise Cylinder and the Falcon 985 H 09894-001/09897-000 H-Keyway use the 09894-001 cam for Falcon M Series mortise locks on deadbolt functions. Deadbolt functions project a 1-inch throw deadbolt, and the cam geometry for a deadbolt function differs from a latch function cam. Using a non-deadbolt cam in a deadbolt function lock will not project the deadbolt correctly.

Falcon M Series Non-Deadbolt Cam (09897-000) for Latchbolt Functions

The Falcon 985 G 5620/5621 1-1/8 Inch G-Keyway uses the non-deadbolt functions cam for Falcon M Series locks operating latchbolt-only functions. Non-deadbolt functions cover passage, storeroom, office, privacy, and related functions where the cylinder retracts the latchbolt but does not project a separate deadbolt.

Keyway Selection: G, C, E, H, P Keyways

The keyway letter in the cylinder SKU identifies which key profile the cylinder accepts. The G keyway is Falcon's standard keyway for conventional cylinders across the MA, M, and other series. All Falcon cylinders are furnished with the G keyway unless otherwise specified at order.

Available keyways at American Locksets:

For master key systems, Falcon uses the A2 system with depths 0-9 as the standard. Cylinders can be ordered keyed differently (KD), keyed alike (KA), or master keyed by submitting a bitting list in order. Contact 877-471-4870 for master key system ordering.

Thumbturn and Dummy Cylinders

Falcon 985T: 1-1/8 Inch Thumbturn Mortise Cylinder

The Falcon 985T 1-1/8 Inch Thumbturn Mortise Cylinder replaces the key cylinder on the interior side of a mortise lock with a thumbturn. This is the correct specification when the interior of the door requires manual deadbolt control by thumbturn rather than by key. Uses the 09894-001 deadbolt cam and is available in 626 Satin Chrome. A 1-1/4 inch thumbturn version is also available for 986-length applications.

Falcon 984D: 1 Inch Dummy Mortise Cylinder

The Falcon 984D 1 Inch Dummy Mortise Cylinder, Non-Handed is a non-functional cylinder used to fill a cylinder hole when no mechanical cylinder operation is required. This is the correct order for exit-side cylinder holes on storeroom functions, for single-cylinder mortise locks where the second cylinder opening must be covered, and for privacy function locks where the outside cylinder position is intentionally inactive.

Specialty Cylinders: 1690 Series and Mailbox

Falcon 169CA: 1690 Series Cylinder Assembly

The Falcon 169CA 1690 Series Cylinder Assembly is the specific cylinder assembly for the Falcon 1690 concealed vertical rod exit device. This is not interchangeable with standard 985/986/987 mortise cylinders. The 169CA is the replacement cylinder for an installed Falcon 1690 Series exit device when the cylinder needs to be replaced or rekeyed separately from the device.

Falcon 954 G 626: Mailbox Cylinder

The Falcon 954 G 626 Mailbox Cylinder is a small-format mortise cylinder for mailbox applications in multi-family and commercial settings, available in G keyway and 626 Satin Chrome finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are Falcon mortise cylinders used for?

Falcon mortise cylinders are pin tumbler cylinders that install in mortise lock housings to provide keyed control of latchbolts and deadbolts in Falcon MA and M Series mortise locks.

Q: What is the difference between Falcon 985, 986, and 987 cylinders?

The numbers indicate cylinder body length: 985 is 1-1/8 inch, 986 is 1-1/4 inch, and 987 is 1-3/8 inch. Select the length based on the door thickness and the specific lock housing requirement.

Q: What is the cam on a Falcon mortise cylinder?

The cam is the rotating driver at the cylinder tail that engages the lock case mechanism. Different cam types are required for MA Series locks versus M Series locks, and deadbolt function cams differ from non-deadbolt function cams.

Q: What is the standard Falcon mortise cylinder keyway?

G keyway is standard for all Falcon conventional mortise cylinders. Other keyways including C (Schlage), E, H, and P are available. Confirm the keyway before ordering.

Q: Can Falcon mortise cylinders be master keyed?

Yes. Cylinders can be ordered keyed differently (KD), keyed alike (KA), or master keyed. Submit your bitting list and keying instructions at order time. Call 877-471-4870 for master key system orders.

Q: What is the Falcon 984D dummy mortise cylinder?

The 984D is a non-functional cylinder used to fill an unused cylinder opening on mortise locks where one side of the lock does not require keyed access.

Q: Is the Falcon 169CA the same as a standard 985 mortise cylinder?

No. The 169CA is a specific cylinder assembly for the Falcon 1690 concealed vertical rod exit device and is not interchangeable with the standard 985/986/987 mortise cylinder series.
