About this item
The Cal-Royal ROC03 is a Grade 2 classroom function lever lock from the Challenger Series, conforming to ANSI F84 and meeting or exceeding BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles. It's specified for schools, offices, hospitals, apartments, hotels, and other public buildings where classroom function is the right access control level for the opening. The latch is a 1/2" throw solid brass deadlocking bolt, the cylinder is a 6-pin solid brass C keyway, and the standard finish is US26D satin chrome.
How ANSI F84 classroom function works
Classroom function is one of the more specific lock configurations in commercial hardware, and understanding the operation before specifying matters. Under ANSI F84, the latch bolt operates freely by lever from either side under normal conditions, so anyone inside or outside can retract the latch and open the door. When a key is inserted and turned in the outside cylinder, the outside lever locks. From that point, the outside lever can't retract the latch — but the inside lever continues to operate normally at all times.
This is the defining characteristic that separates classroom function from storeroom or entrance function. The inside lever is never locked, never requires a key, and provides free egress at all times regardless of the status of the outside cylinder. To unlock the outside lever, a key must be used again from outside. The lock doesn't toggle to an unlocked state by closing the door or rotating a thumbturn, the way privacy or entrance function locks do. That operational structure is specifically designed for classroom security scenarios where an authorized keyholder needs to lock a room from the corridor quickly without entering.
Physical specifications and door preparation
The ROC03 installs on doors 1-3/8" to 2" thick, covering the standard range from light commercial wood doors through standard hollow metal construction. Standard backset is 2-3/4", with optional backsets of 2-3/8", 3-3/4", and 5" available for non-standard door preparations. The front plate is 2-1/4" x 1-1/8" and adjusts for both flat and beveled doors in 1/8" increments up to 2", which accommodates most commercial door edge profiles without additional hardware.
The strike ships as an ASA standard strike. T-strike and full lip strike options are available for frame conditions where the standard ASA strike doesn't seat correctly. Latch and stick screws are 8-32 x 1" FPH dual purpose, and the latch is reversible for both right-hand and left-hand door applications. Trim is wrought brass, bronze, or stainless steel, and levers are zinc casting plated to match the trim finish. The 6-pin solid brass C keyway cylinder ships with 2 keys per lock. Keying options including less core and less cylinder configurations are available at ordering for facilities integrating the ROC03 into an existing master key system.
Challenger Series Grade 2 positioning
The ROC03 sits within Cal-Royal's Challenger Grade 2 line, which covers the standard commercial specification tier for medium-duty lever locks across a range of functions. Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles is the correct specification for classroom and office doors that see regular daily cycling but don't require the 1,000,000-cycle durability standard of Grade 1 institutional hardware. The UL listing on the latch bolt supports installation on fire-rated door assemblies where the latch is required to meet that certification. Browse the full range of functions available in the Cal-Royal Challenger Grade 2 series, or see all Cal-Royal lever locks across series and grades. For the broader selection of commercial cylindrical lever locks across all brands available on this site, that category covers entrance, storeroom, passage, and other functions for the same opening type.
