About this item
The Don-Jo EL-115 is an extended lip strike measuring 2-1/4" wide by 1-1/2" tall with a 2-1/4" lip projection, made from 18 gauge (.050) steel. It's a direct replacement or new-installation strike for cylindrical locks and deadbolts where the standard lip strike doesn't provide enough coverage for the door-to-frame gap. Two #8-32 x 3/4" FH combo screws are included. Available in four finishes and an optional radius corner configuration, the EL-115 fits standard door frame preparations without modification.
What an extended lip strike is and when you need one
A standard lip strike has a short lip that extends just enough to guide the latchbolt into the strike pocket as the door closes. That works well when the door sits close to the stop and the latchbolt aligns cleanly with the strike. When there's a larger gap between the door face and the door stop, or when the door has warped or the frame has shifted, a standard lip may not provide enough guiding surface and the latch won't catch consistently.
An extended lip strike adds length to that guiding surface. The 2-1/4" lip on the EL-115 reaches further across the door stop than a standard strike, covering more of the approach path for the latch and giving the bolt a larger target area to engage. This is also the correct strike type for doors where the backset puts the latchbolt closer to the edge of a standard strike's lip, or where the installation requires a strike long enough to cover an older, slightly misaligned preparation in the frame. Extended lip strikes are commonly specified on retrofit and repair jobs where getting a new standard strike to align perfectly with the existing latch position would require reframing or repositioning the lockset.
Dimensions, gauge, and finish options
The EL-115 is 18 gauge, which corresponds to .050" steel thickness. This is the standard commercial weight for replacement door strikes and provides adequate rigidity for cylindrical lock and deadbolt applications on interior and light exterior commercial doors. The plate measures 2-1/4" across and 1-1/2" in height, with the 2-1/4" lip projection extending from the face of the strike downward across the door stop.
Four finishes are available: 605 bright brass with clear coat, 619 satin nickel with clear coat, 620 satin nickel blackened satin relieved, and 630 stainless steel. The stainless 630 and satin nickel 619 are the most commonly specified for commercial applications. The radius corner version, designated with the RC suffix (for example, EL-115-630-RC), is available for frames where square corners leave a visible gap or where the door frame profile calls for a rounded-corner strike plate. The EL series ships in display packaging only.
Installation and compatibility
Installation uses the two included #8-32 x 3/4" FH combo screws, which seat into standard door frame preparations for cylindrical locksets. The EL-115 is compatible with a wide range of cylindrical lever locks and deadbolts where the latch throw and strike pocket dimensions match. It does not include a strike box, so if the frame preparation calls for a boxed strike or a reinforced strike with a dust box, that needs to be specified separately. The EL-115 is the appropriate choice for standard unboxed frame applications. For coordinating door hardware on the same opening, browse the cylindrical lever locks and deadbolts that this strike type commonly serves. The full selection of strikes and replacement door hardware components is available in the strikes category on this site.
Select your finish and confirm whether the square-corner or radius-corner (RC) version matches your frame preparation before ordering.
