About this item

The dormakaba 8916 AF89P is a heavy-duty surface-mounted door closer from the 8900 Series, fitted with a flat form non-hold open arm and rated for adjustable spring sizes 1 through 6. It meets ANSI A156.4 Grade 1 requirements, carries UL and CUL listing, and is backed by a 25-year warranty. The closer is non-handed and installs in regular, top jamb, and parallel arm configurations, making it a single-SKU solution for most commercial interior and exterior barrier-free door opening conditions. Sex nuts and machine screws for 1-3/4" thick doors are included standard.

What the 8900 Series flat arm configuration covers

The AF89P arm designation on the 8916 indicates the flat form (flatform) arm style in non-hold-open configuration. The flat arm sits lower in profile than a standard parallel arm, which reduces the projection of the closer from the door or frame face. On doors where clearance between the closer and adjacent wall conditions is limited, or where the specification calls for a lower-profile arm aesthetically, the flatform arm delivers the required closing function without the added projection of a conventional arm assembly.

Non-hold-open means the arm does not have a built-in mechanism to hold the door open at any position. The door closes consistently after each opening cycle. For openings where hold-open function is required, a separate hold-open arm configuration is available within the 8900 Series. The non-hold-open specification is correct for fire-rated door assemblies and for any opening where the building code or occupancy type requires the door to return to the closed position after each use.

Backcheck, delayed action, and valve adjustability

The 8916 includes an intensity-adjustable hydraulic backcheck that cushions the door before it reaches fully open. Without backcheck, a hard door opening can damage the door, the frame, or the adjacent wall. The backcheck on the 8916 is hydraulic, meaning the cushioning effect engages as the door approaches the end of its opening travel and slows it before impact. A backcheck positioning valve maintains the effective backcheck range specifically during parallel arm installations, where the arm geometry changes how force is applied at different opening angles.

Optional delayed action is available through a separate independent valve. Delayed action extends the closing cycle, keeping the door open longer after the opening force is released to allow unobstructed passage through the opening. This is specified on doors with high pedestrian throughput, accessible entrances, or any opening where a standard closing speed creates a pinch hazard for slower-moving occupants. All valve adjustments, including backcheck positioning, are accessible with the closer installed and are tamper-resistant to prevent unauthorized field changes.

Construction, temperature performance, and certifications

The 8900 Series targets 10 million closing cycles, which is the Grade 1 heavy-duty threshold for commercial door closers under ANSI A156.4. The closer body is designed to minimize changes in closing speed during severe temperature fluctuations, a requirement for exterior applications where the hydraulic fluid viscosity can shift significantly between summer and winter conditions. The arm assembly is heavy-duty steel. The cover is impact-resistant full plastic. The closer is available in 689 silver aluminum painted, 695 dark bronze painted, and 693 black painted finishes.
