About this item
The dormakaba EP-STD-03-001 is the standard software implementation kit for the E-Plex access control lock platform, compatible with P2000, E1500, E2000, E3000, and E5000 Series locks. It provides all the components needed to configure locks, manage user access codes, and retrieve audit event data from E-Plex locks using a Windows-based PC and a laptop or netbook as the mobile communication unit. The kit ships with a software CD, an IrDA USB adapter, a USB flash drive preloaded with the M-Unit software application, and a printed Getting Started reference sheet.
What the E-Plex Standard Software Kit includes and how it works
The EP-STD-03-001 bundles two distinct components. The first is the main E-Plex Standard Software application on CD, which installs on a Host PC and serves as the central database for lock configuration and user access assignments. The second is the EP-MU-COM-001 M-Unit communication kit, which turns a separate laptop or netbook into a portable programming device that communicates directly with the locks.
Communication between the M-Unit laptop and each E-Plex lock happens through infrared. The included IrDA adapter has a USB interface on one end that plugs into the laptop's USB port, and an infrared transmit/receive window on the other end that points at the lock's IrDA window to transfer data. A USB extension cable is included to help position the adapter at the correct angle if the laptop's port location makes direct alignment difficult. The USB flash drive, preloaded with the E-Plex PC M-Unit software and its User Guide, carries lock configuration data and audit records back and forth between the M-Unit laptop in the field and the Host PC running the main software in the office.
When you need the flash drive and when you don't
The USB flash drive is the transport medium between two separate computers — the Host PC with the main E-Plex database and the M-Unit laptop used in the field. The typical workflow is: export configuration from the Host PC to the flash drive, carry the drive to the field, sync the M-Unit laptop from the drive, then use the M-Unit to program locks via IrDA. After collecting audit data from the locks, the process reverses: sync the M-Unit back to the flash drive, return to the Host PC, and import the audit data.
If the same laptop runs both the main E-Plex Standard Software application and the M-Unit software simultaneously, the flash drive is not needed for transfers between those two applications because they share the same hard drive. This single-laptop setup reduces the number of steps in the workflow but requires the laptop to meet the minimum specifications for both applications.
M-Unit PC requirements and system compatibility
The M-Unit PC, whether a dedicated netbook or a shared laptop, requires Microsoft Windows XP Home or higher as the operating system, a minimum of 1MB of RAM, a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 600, 4GB of storage (flash or hard drive), and one available USB port for the IrDA adapter. These are the minimum specifications as listed on the product; modern Windows laptops typically exceed all of them. The main E-Plex Standard Software runs on a standard Windows-based desktop or laptop PC with no additional hardware requirements beyond the system CD drive for installation.
