What passage function means on a panic exit trim

Exit device trim function determines how the outside of the door operates. Passage is the most open configuration: the lever retracts the latch freely from outside at all times, with no cylinder and no key required. This is the correct specification for vestibules, corridors, stairwells, and other locations where the outside entry point needs to remain accessible to all occupants without any credential. The inside of the door always provides free egress through the panic bar regardless of the trim function, which is a code requirement for all panic-equipped doors.

Passage function is distinct from entrance function (lever plus cylinder, outside lever can be locked by thumbturn inside), storeroom function (lever always locked, key required to enter), and other ANSI-defined functions that add controlled access on the outside. If the opening needs outside access to be controlled by key or credential, passage is not the right trim  a different function within the YR series is the correct specification. The YR23-630 is compatible specifically with dormakaba 9300, F9300, 9400, and F9400 series rim and surface vertical rod exit devices. Exit trim is device-specific — the mounting configuration, spindle geometry, and latch engagement are designed for a specific exit device chassis. Installing trim from the wrong series or manufacturer on a 9300 or 9400 series device will result in a non-functional installation. Confirm the series number of the installed exit device from the device label or the original hardware schedule before ordering the YR23.

Handing on exit trim describes the relationship between the door swing and the trim mounting. RHR (Right Hand Reverse) designates doors hinged on the right when viewed from the outside, swinging away from the viewer. LHR (Left Hand Reverse) designates doors hinged on the left under the same viewing condition. Most commercial doors in corridor applications are RHR, but this should be confirmed from the door schedule or by observing the installed door. Selecting the wrong handing results in a trim that won't seat correctly on the device.
