Falcon W581 - Grade 2 Storeroom Lock

The Falcon W581 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lever lock from the Falcon W Series, built to ANSI function F86. The outside lever is inoperable at all times. The only way to retract the latchbolt from the outside is by inserting a key in the outside lever cylinder. The inside lever is always free, providing immediate egress without a key at any time. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 and UL listed for 3-hour A label fire door assemblies. Non-handed, no field disassembly required for re-handing.

Why storeroom function is the highest-security cylindrical lock option

Among the standard ANSI cylindrical lock functions, storeroom is the most restrictive. Entry function locks the outside lever by button or thumbturn but can be released from inside without a key. Office function provides two push button modes but the inside lever always releases the button. Privacy function allows an emergency outside override with a coin or tool. Storeroom function provides none of those inside-controlled releases. The outside lever is mechanically inoperable regardless of what happens on the inside. The only path to entry from outside is a key, every single time.

This matters in practice on doors where uncontrolled access from either side creates a real risk. Server rooms, utility closets, pharmaceutical storage, equipment rooms, and restricted access corridors all represent situations where the outside lever should never retract the latch under any circumstance other than authorized key use. If the door closes with the key left inside, a key is required to re-enter. That is not a limitation of the W581. It is the intended function.

Deadlocking latch and cylinder specifications

The 1/2" stainless steel latchbolt is a deadlocking type. When the door is fully closed, an auxiliary latch pins the main bolt in place, which prevents the bolt from being retracted by shimming, credit card attacks, or other external manipulation between the door and frame. The latch front is self-adjusting to accommodate flat or beveled door edges without a separate beveled faceplate. The 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" ANSI curved lip strike meets ANSI A115.2 door frame preparation standards, and combination screws are included for installation on wood or metal doors and frames.

The standard cylinder is conventional solid brass housing and plug, drilled with 6-pin chambers and pinned in 5 standard. Six-chamber pinning is available at no cost when specified. Seven-pin conventional cylinders and 6 or 7-pin SFIC options are also available for facilities running interchangeable core master key programs. The G keyway is standard on conventional cylinders. The A keyway is standard on SFIC. All Falcon conventional keyways are available. Two nickel silver keys ship standard with every lock.

Lever styles, finishes, and where the W581 fits in the W Series

Three lever styles are available in the storeroom function: PD (Dane), BD (Quantum/standard), and LD (Longitude). Knob styles Elite (ELI) and Hana (HAK) are also available. All levers are pressure-cast zinc solid construction with no inserts, ADA and state disability compliant, and use individual heavy-duty springs for lever return and sag prevention. Lever trim is through-bolted for a rigid, tamper-resistant connection. Seven finishes are offered: 605 polished brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 polished chrome, and 626 satin chrome.
