About this item
The PDQ GP176 is the Privacy Bedroom/Bathroom function in PDQ's GP Series Grade 2 heavy duty cylindrical lever lock. It's the lock type specified for commercial restrooms, hotel guest bathrooms, multi-family apartment bathrooms, and any private space where an occupant needs to lock a door from inside without a key, staff needs emergency access from outside without breaking the door, and the lock releases automatically when the door closes so the next person can enter without calling maintenance.
Those three behaviors - push button inside, emergency release outside, auto-unlock on close - define the Privacy Bedroom/Bathroom function. Understanding all three is what separates a correct specification from an incorrect one.
How the Three-Part Privacy Function Works
The push button on the inside rose locks the outside lever. One push, lever locked. The occupant has privacy. Neither someone trying the lever from outside nor rattling the door handle can retract the latch bolt.
The emergency release is a small hole on the outside trim. Inserting a slim tool - a coin edge, a flat screwdriver tip, or the supplied emergency release key - through that hole mechanically trips the push button from the outside. No key cylinder, no master key, no force required. A hotel housekeeper, a building manager, or a first responder uses the emergency release when someone is incapacitated inside a locked restroom and can't respond. The outside lever becomes free immediately.
The auto-unlock feature releases the push button when the door closes. If an occupant locks the restroom and then walks out and lets the door close behind them, the door closing mechanically trips the push button. The next person to try the outside lever finds it unlocked. This prevents the single most common privacy lock complaint in commercial restrooms: the locked vacant bathroom that requires a maintenance call to open.

GP176 vs GP126 vs GT176: Choosing Between Them
The GP126 is the Passage function - both levers are always free, no locking capability. Passage is for corridors, meeting rooms, and closets that never need to be locked. The GP176 is Privacy - inside push button, emergency release, auto-unlock on close. If the door needs any locking capability from inside, the GP126 is the wrong choice. The GP176 is correct.
The GT176 is the Grade 1 Privacy function from PDQ's GT Series - higher cycle count, higher lever torque, longer service life. For restrooms on high-traffic floors in Class A office buildings or busy retail environments, the GT176 is the specification step up. For standard commercial restrooms in offices and multi-family buildings, the GP176 Grade 2 delivers the performance the application requires at a lower investment.
Both share the same lever profiles (Philadelphia, Boston, Miami), the same trim aesthetic, and the same door prep compatibility - so they can be mixed across a building's hardware schedule without visual inconsistency.
Healthcare and Hospitality: Antimicrobial Coating Option
The GP176 is available with an optional antimicrobial coating on finishes 606, 612, 613, and 622 (not available on 605 bright brass or 625 bright chrome). For healthcare restrooms, assisted living facilities, and high-occupancy hospitality applications where surface hygiene is a documented requirement, the antimicrobial coating on the lever and rose surfaces is available without changing the lock's mechanical specification or door prep.
