About this item
The PDQ MJ232 is an extra heavy duty mortise cylinder deadbolt with three operating features on one lock body: a key cylinder on the outside, a thumbturn on the inside, and an indicator on the outside face that displays "Occupied" when the deadbolt is extended and "Vacant" when it's retracted. Anyone approaching the door can read the status before trying to enter. The occupant locks from inside with the thumbturn. Staff or authorized users unlock from outside with a key. And in a properly managed building, the indicator eliminates the need to knock or rattle the handle to find out if a room is in use.
This is the correct lock for single-occupancy commercial restrooms, private offices, changing rooms, exam rooms, and any application where privacy status visibility from the outside corridor matters as much as the security of the bolt itself.
Mortise Cylinder vs Rim Cylinder: The Construction Difference
The MJ232 uses a mortise cylinder - a 6 or 7-pin cylinder in the standard 1-1/4-inch mortise threading format, the same format used in commercial mortise locks like the Schlage L Series and Corbin Russwin ML2000. The cylinder mounts in the door face through the lock case. The lock body mortises into the door edge with a steel dichromated case that resists corrosion from cleaning agents and moisture - important in restroom and healthcare applications.
This is fundamentally different from the rim cylinder deadbolts in the KV and KM Series, where the lock body mounts on the door surface and the cylinder mounts from outside through a face-plate hole. A mortise cylinder deadbolt is more resistant to cylinder extraction attacks because the cylinder is recessed into the door face and supported by the case rather than exposed on the surface.
The 1-inch stainless steel throw bolt engages 1 full inch into the strike. Stainless steel bolt - not brass - for higher corrosion resistance and bolt face durability in wet and high-cleaning environments. For all commercial mortise deadbolts, browse our mortise deadbolts catalog.
Three-Part Function: Key, Thumbturn, Indicator
From outside: Key extends and retracts the deadbolt. If the indicator shows Occupied, the bolt is engaged and the door is locked from inside. A key from outside still retracts the bolt - this is a single cylinder configuration, not double cylinder, so keyed outside access always works regardless of the inside thumbturn position.
From inside: The ADA-compliant thumbturn extends and retracts the deadbolt. One hand, no gripping or twisting required. When the thumbturn extends the bolt, the outside indicator flips to Occupied immediately. When the occupant retracts the bolt to exit, the indicator shows Vacant.
The indicator is synchronized to the bolt position, not to a separate locking mechanism. Whatever state the bolt is in - extended or retracted - the indicator shows it accurately.
IC Compatibility: SFIC and Schlage LFIC
The MJ232 accepts both SFIC (Best, Falcon, Arrow compatible) and Large Format IC cores (Schlage LFIC compatible). For buildings running SFIC master key programs, order with "SFL - SFIC prepped but less core" and add the core from your program. For buildings running Schlage LFIC, order with "LFL - Schlage LFIC prepped but less core." The conventional mortise cylinder option (6 or 7-pin) is also available in SCC (Schlage C Compatible) keyway standard, with 12 additional keyway options for buildings on Arrow, Corbin, Russwin, Sargent, Yale, or Falcon key systems.
