Sargent 281 UO Door Closer - Universal Arm

The Sargent 281 UO is the universal arm configuration of the 281 Powerglide Series - a cast iron surface-mounted door closer that gives the installer a single package covering three distinct mounting applications. Understanding the "UO" designation is the starting point for anyone ordering this product. UO stands for Universal arm package, and it means this package ships with the brackets and arm components needed to install the 281 body in standard arm, top jamb, or parallel arm configuration. The Three Mounting Configurations in the UO Package

Standard arm mounting places the closer on the pull side of the door - the side you pull to open. The arm runs from the closer body to a shoe on the frame. This is the most common commercial closer installation and the default choice when pull-side space is available.

Top jamb mounting places the closure on the frame header above the door rather than on the door itself. This configuration is used when the door pull side does not have sufficient clearance for the closer body, or when the frame geometry requires mounting above the opening. The closer still controls the door through the arm connecting down to the door face.

Parallel arm mounting places the closer on the push side of the door with the arm running parallel to the door top. This keeps the closer body on the hinge side and the arm on the push side, protecting the closer from abuse on high-traffic exterior doors and reducing the visual profile on the door face. Parallel arm produces slightly less closing force than standard arm for the same spring setting - account for this on heavy exterior doors by adjusting to a higher spring size.

Cast Iron Body and the 25-Million-Cycle Standard

The 281 Series body is heavy-duty one-piece cast iron. Many closer specifications in institutional and government construction require cast iron specifically - aluminum body closers do not satisfy those specs. The 281 is designed to meet facilities maintaining cast iron requirements without compromise. The heat-treated full rack and pinion mechanism inside the cast iron housing exceeds 25 million operational cycles. The 1-1/2-inch diameter piston delivers consistent door control throughout that cycle life.

Four-Valve Control System and the Delayed Action Option

Four separate brass low-sensitivity control valves give installers and maintenance staff independent adjustment of each closing phase. The sweep speed valve controls how fast the door travels from fully open to the latch zone. The latching speed valve controls the final speed as the door approaches and engages the strike. The backcheck valve provides hydraulic resistance as the door opens, cushioning the door and protecting hardware from impact - note that backcheck is a hydraulic cushion, not a physical door stop and should not replace a proper door stop in high-wind or high-traffic applications. All four valves are captured in the body to prevent accidental removal during adjustment. Adjustment requires a standard 1/8-inch allen wrench.

The optional delayed action (DA) valve holds the door open for a minimum of 20 seconds before closing begins. This is the correct specification for ADA-compliant installations where occupants using wheelchairs, mobility devices, or carts need additional hold-open time.

Spring Power, Non-Handed Body, and Retrofit Compatibility

The 281 spring is adjustable from size 1 through size 6 in the field - factory preset at size 3. One closer body works on any door size within that range and on both right-hand and left-hand doors without modification. The 281 UO directly retrofits existing Sargent 250 and 1250 Series closer installations without frame modifications. Arms are also interchangeable with the Sargent 1431, 250, 1250, and 351 Series, simplifying parts inventory for facilities managing multiple Sargent closer generations.
