Von Duprin 9827L / 9927L Surface Vertical Rod Panic Exit Device, With Rigid Lever, 996 Trim

The Von Duprin 9827L and 9927L are Surface Vertical Rod (SVR) panic exit devices from Von Duprin's 98/99 Series, supplied with the 996L lever trim as a complete unit. The 9827L uses the 98 Series smooth mechanism case, and the 9927L uses the 99 Series grooved mechanism case. Both are mechanically and dimensionally identical. The choice between them is a visible aesthetic preference, not a functional one.

SVR means the vertical rods run on the surface of the door face, visible from both sides, connecting the center case to strikes at the top header and at the floor or threshold. This configuration is specified when the door construction doesn't allow for concealed rod installation: hollow metal doors with standard 86 or 161 cutouts, retrofit applications, or doors where concealed channels aren't accessible. What SVR Covers That Rim and Concealed Rod Don't

Rim exit devices only secure at the latch point on the strike jamb. Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) devices run rods inside the door construction. Surface Vertical Rod devices address doors that need top and bottom bolt security but can't accommodate concealed rods. The surface rods are exposed on the door face and run to an overhead strike at the header and a floor bolt or threshold strike at the bottom. This gives the 9827L/9927L three-point latching: latch bolt plus top bolt plus bottom bolt, which is required on many commercial exterior applications by local fire codes and AHJ requirements.

The 996 Trim: Lever Function and Breakaway Design

The outside trim is the 996L lever. Function: key locks and unlocks the lever. Handed, field-reversible. Cylinder: rim cylinder or 1-1/4" mortise cylinder. The 996L Breakaway lever design allows the lever to rotate free under excessive force rather than transmitting that force to the spindle and internal components, which prevents costly damage in high-abuse environments. The Breakaway feature is the reason the 996L has become the standard lever trim offering on 98L/99L Series devices.

The lever function on this complete unit is the classroom/storeroom configuration: outside lever is locked until unlocked by key, relocks when the door closes.

Physical Specifications and Dimensions

ANSI A156.3, 2001, Grade 1. UL listed for Panic Hardware and Fire Hardware. Many configurations also certified for Hurricane Resistant Applications.

Latch bolt: 3/4" (19mm) throw. Deadlocking latchbolt provides security at standard device cost.

Device lengths: 3-foot bar for doors 2'4" to 3' (711mm to 914mm). 4-foot bar for doors 2'10" to 4' (864mm to 1219mm). When ordering for replacement, verify rod length, as 3-foot and 4-foot doors require different rod kits.

Center case: 8" x 2-3/4" x 2-3/8" (203mm x 70mm x 60mm). Device centerline from finished floor: 39-13/16" (1011mm), or 39-11/16" (1008mm) with mullion.

Pushbar projection neutral: 3-13/16" (97mm). Pushbar depressed: 3-1/16" (78mm).

Strike included: Standard 299 strike, dull black finish. Fasteners for 1-3/4" (44mm) and 2-1/4" (57mm) doors included. Optional 425 SNB fastener pack available.

The Quiet One Dampener and Device Function

All 98/99 Series devices include Von Duprin's Quiet One fluid dampener as standard. It decelerates the pushbar on its return stroke to reduce operational noise, which is specified by facilities managers in hospitals, schools, and institutional buildings where noise control is a priority.

Device ships in Exit Only/Dogging/Nightlatch configuration, field selectable. Hex key dogging standard. For Thumbpiece, Key, or Lever function, remove the NL drive screw at installation.
