How the Yale 2196 LFIC mortise cylinder differs from the conventional 2153 mortise cylinder

The 2153 and 2196 are both Yale mortise cylinders in the 1-1/2-inch body length, but they use fundamentally different cylinder systems. The 2153 is a conventional pin cylinder: it has a fixed pinned plug that accepts a specific key and requires a locksmith to remove and repin the cylinder to change the key cut. The 2196 is an LFIC mortise cylinder housing with no fixed pin cylinder inside. It accepts a Yale Full Size Interchangeable Core that can be removed and replaced by an authorized person using a control key, without any tools and without disassembling the lock body.

This makes the 2196 the correct specification when a mortise lock installation needs to participate in a Yale LFIC key control program, where all cores across cylindrical locks, exit devices, and mortise locks are interchangeable within the same key system. Which Yale LFIC cores install in the 2196 mortise cylinder housing

The 2196 accepts Yale Full Size Interchangeable Core (LFIC) cores, which is the same large format core used across the Accentra and Yale line of LFIC-prepped hardware. The core is not included with the 2196 cylinder housing and must be ordered separately. The LFIC core must match the keyway designated on the 2196 housing for the key to pass through the housing and engage the core correctly.

The Yale 1210 and 1220 are the standard Yale LFIC cores. The 1210 is the 6-pin version and the 1220 is the 7-pin version. Keyway selection, finish options, and the 2160 cam on the 2196

The 2196 is available in GC through GH, SA through SH, and TA through TH Yale proprietary keyway series. The keyway designation on the 2196 housing must align with the keyway on the LFIC core being installed, as the housing keyway opening must allow the key to pass through and engage the core plug correctly. The 2196 is available in eight finishes: 626 satin chrome, 606 satin brass, 605 bright brass, 625 bright chrome, 613 oil-rubbed bronze, 613E, 613, and 612 satin bronze.
