About this item
The Aiphone LEF-3 is a 3-call surface mount master station built for the LEF series selective calling intercom system. It lets a receptionist, security desk, or facility manager communicate individually with up to three separate door or sub-stations without broadcasting to every station on the system at once. Audio-only and open voice, the LEF-3 runs on 12V DC power, mounts flush to a wall or sits on a desk, and houses its components in a durable ABS plastic enclosure measuring 7-1/16" H x 5-5/8" W x 2-1/8" D. LED indicators and an audible call-tone alert the master station operator when any sub-station initiates a call.
How selective calling works on the Aiphone LEF-3
Selective calling is the core operational advantage of the LEF-3 over a basic paging intercom. When a visitor or staff member at a sub-station presses their call button, a call-tone sounds and the corresponding LED on the LEF-3 illuminates for 20 seconds. The master station operator then presses the LED selector button for that specific station, which activates the communication channel exclusively to that station. No other station on the system hears the conversation. To respond hands-free, the operator replies without pressing any additional button. To speak push-to-talk, they hold the TALK/LISTEN toggle. The master station can also initiate a call outward to any sub-station by depressing that station's selector and calling by voice or tone. The privacy feature on select sub-stations prevents the master from eavesdropping unless the sub-station occupant has released the privacy button, giving occupants control over when they can be monitored or called.
What's the system capacity and how does it scale?
The LEF-3 supports up to 4 total stations in its native configuration: the master itself plus up to 3 sub or door stations. Where a facility needs more coverage, Aiphone offers the LEF-5 and LEF-10 masters that support 5-call and 10-call configurations respectively, and the LEF series allows intermixing of different master types within a single system up to a maximum of 11 total stations. That means a building could run one LEF-10 master at the main reception desk and two LEF-3 masters at secondary positions, all within the same wired network. The system handles any combination of master and sub-stations up to that ceiling. For facilities that need door release integrated into the intercom workflow, an Aiphone RY-PA relay connects the LEF system to an electric strike or magnetic lock, enabling the master station operator to release a door without leaving their position.
Wiring, power, and installation requirements for the LEF-3
The LEF-3 runs on 12V DC supplied by the Aiphone PS-1225UL power supply, sold separately. Wiring distance from any sub-station to the master station reaches 650 feet on standard 22AWG wire and extends to 1,600 feet on 18AWG wire, which matters for larger facilities where door stations are located far from the master desk. Master-to-master connections use Aiphone 822212 cable. Sub-station and door-station connections accept Aiphone 822202 (2-conductor), 822203 (3-conductor), 821802 (2-conductor 18AWG), or 821803 (3-conductor 18AWG) wiring. The surface mount housing attaches directly to a wall backbox or sits on a desk without additional hardware. Operating temperature range runs from 32°F to 104°F, covering standard interior commercial environments. The full range of Aiphone intercom products and accessories is available, including compatible door stations, sub-stations, and power supplies. The LEF-3 is a straightforward, reliable choice for small to mid-size facilities that need selective station control, clear audio communication, and a hardwired system that doesn't depend on a network connection or software platform to function.
