The BEST 7KC30L is a Grade 2 privacy lever lock from the 7KC medium duty commercial series, built to ANSI function F76. How ANSI F76 privacy function works on the 7KC30L

Privacy function means the outside lever is normally free to rotate and retract the latch, just like a passage lever. Pushing the inside button engages a blocker that locks the outside lever. The outside lever can't retract the latch while that button is engaged, so someone turning the handle from outside is stopped. Three things release that locked state from the outside: rotating the outside slotted button with a coin or flathead tool, rotating the inside lever, or closing the door, which automatically retracts the blocking mechanism. The inside lever is always unlocked and always allows egress regardless of the button position.

This is the correct function for restrooms and single-occupancy spaces because it keeps the door lockable for the occupant and releasable in an emergency without a key. It's not a security function. Privacy function doesn't resist forced entry the way a storeroom or entrance function does. The latch is a 1/2" throw deadlocking latch, which prevents the bolt from being pushed back when the door is closed, but the outside release is intentionally accessible.

Physical specifications and door preparation requirements

The 7KC30L installs on doors 1-3/8" to 2" thick using a standard cylindrical bored preparation: 2-1/8" diameter bore for the lock housing and 1" diameter for the latch tube. Standard backset is 2-3/4". Additional backsets of 2-3/8", 3-3/4", and 5" are available for non-standard door preps. The front plate measures 2-1/4" x 1-1/8" x 5/32" at the 2-3/4" backset and 2-1/4" x 1" x 5/32" at the 2-3/8" backset. The strike is S3, measuring 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" with a curved lip and box for 1-3/4" door applications per ANSI A115.2.

The lever is 5-1/4" long with a return, projects 2-1/2" from the door face, and uses a zinc base plated to match the chosen finish. The D3 rose is 3-1/2" in diameter with concealed mounting screws and a snap-on inside rose that leaves no exposed fasteners on the interior face. Through-bolt mounting studs increase torque resistance compared to standard screw mounting. A hub torque spring resists lever sag over time. The lock is reversible for either door hand without removing the keyed lever.

Available finishes are 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, and 626 satin chrome. Internal components are brass, bronze, or zinc.
