About this item
The Cal-Royal GL220 is a Grade 2 single cylinder gate latch conforming to ANSI E0153 and ANSI A156.2 Series 4000. It uses a dead locking latch bolt operated by key from the outside and thumbturn from the inside, and stays locked in all other conditions. Built from wrought brass or stainless steel, it adjusts for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" and installs on a standard 2-3/8" backset. The 6-pin solid brass cylinder ships in the standard C keyway with six available finishes.
What gate latch function means and where the GL220 is used
Gate latch function is a specific combination of storeroom and dead locking behavior. The latch bolt is always locked from the outside unless a key is inserted and turned. There's no exterior lever or knob that can retract the latch without the key — the outside cylinder is the only way to release the latch from that side. From the inside, the thumbturn provides instant release without a key, which satisfies egress requirements on doors where people need to leave freely but entry must always be controlled.
The GL220 is specified for wood or metal gate applications, smaller outbuildings, perimeter doors, pool enclosures, and secondary access points where a keyed exterior entry with free interior egress is the right security level. It also works on interior storeroom-style applications where standard cylindrical deadbolts are overspecified or where the door prep calls for a gate latch configuration rather than a full deadbolt body. The dead locking feature on the latch bolt prevents the bolt from being pushed back when the door is closed, which gives the lock genuine security rather than just a simple spring latch that could be slipped.
Physical specifications and door preparation
The GL220 installs on doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick with a 2-3/8" backset. The bore requirement is 1" for the latch tube and either 1-1/2" or 2-1/8" for the lock housing depending on the door preparation already in place. The deadbolt faceplate measures 2-1/4" x 1" and ships with a 1/8" plastic filler that converts the 1" faceplate to a 1-1/8" width for doors prepped to the wider standard. The strike is 1-1/8" x 2-3/4" with a square corner, standard for the backset and door thickness range. The cylinder is a 6-pin solid brass tumbler in the standard C keyway, which is a widely available keyway for rekeying and key cutting through locksmith services.
Finish options and grade certification
Six finishes are available for the GL220: US26D satin chrome, US3 bright brass, US4 satin brass, US10B oil rubbed bronze, US15 satin nickel, and US5 antique brass. The bright chrome US26 is also listed as a model variant. The satin chrome and satin nickel options are the most commonly specified for contemporary installations. The oil rubbed bronze and antique brass options suit traditional or exterior architectural palettes.
The GL220 carries a Grade 2 certification per ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, placing it in the standard commercial and institutional hardware tier. Grade 2 covers medium-duty applications and corresponds to the performance expectations for secondary doors, perimeter access points, and gate applications that see regular but not extreme cycling. The broader cylindrical deadbolts section covers compatible options across all brands. For perimeter and exterior security hardware that pairs with gate latches, the padlocks section offers coordinating options for adjacent access points.
Select your finish when ordering. The GL220 is the 2-3/8" backset model. Confirm your door bore preparation before specifying the housing bore size.
