The Ives 5BB1HW NRP is the heavyweight, non-removable pin version in the Ives 5BB ball bearing commercial hinge series. Four specifications in the model name, each addressing a different installation requirement: five knuckle barrel for commercial door duty, 0.180-inch heavy gauge leaf for heavy or high-cycle doors, four ball bearings for low-friction high-frequency operation, and a non-removable pin for security on doors where the hinge barrel is accessible from the unsecured side.

The non-removable pin is the specification that separates this hinge from the standard 5BB1HW. On an outswing door, the hinge knuckles are on the exterior face of the door, which means anyone outside the building can see and reach the hinge barrel. Standard removable pins can be driven upward out of the barrel with a punch and hammer in under a minute, allowing the door leaf to be lifted away from the frame regardless of what the lock is doing. The NRP pin cannot be driven out while the door is in the frame. The pin's geometry prevents upward movement when the hinge leaves are assembled and the door is hanging. The standard weight 5BB1 uses 0.134-inch gauge metal. The 5BB1HW (this product) uses a 0.180-inch gauge. Both are five-knuckle full mortise ball bearing hinges in the same series. The 0.180 gauge adds 34 percent more metal in the hinge leaf, which increases rigidity, reduces flex under sustained door weight, and extends service life on heavy doors and high-frequency openings. Solid wood doors over 1-3/4 inches thick, heavy aluminum and glass doors, and institutional entrances that cycle hundreds of times daily are the correct applications for the heavyweight version.
