About this item
The PHI Precision C-RPMLR-K is the Motorized Latch Retraction (MLR) retrofit kit for Precision Apex 2000 Series exit devices. It converts an existing standard Apex 2000 exit device to motorized latch retraction in the field - no new device purchase required. The kit includes the pre-wired motorized channel assembly that replaces the standard mechanical channel in the device body, adding electronic latch control to a door that was previously mechanical-only.
The kit can also be installed on existing Apex 2000 exit devices that already have Electric Latch Retraction (ELR), upgrading them from solenoid-driven to motor-driven latch retraction.
MLR vs ELR: Motor vs Solenoid - Why It Matters
Electric Latch Retraction has been the standard access-controlled exit device option for decades. It uses a solenoid - an electromagnetic coil that generates a linear pull force to retract the latch bolt when energized. Solenoids work well, but they have three limitations that become problems in specific installations: high current draw, audible click on activation, and voltage drop over long wire runs that limits how far the panel can be from the device.
Motorized Latch Retraction replaces the solenoid with a small motor mechanism that drives the latch bolt mechanically. The motor draws significantly less current than a solenoid, operates more quietly, and maintains consistent latch retraction performance across wire runs that would cause voltage drop issues with a solenoid-based system.
For facilities with large footprints - hospital campuses, university buildings, government complexes - where access control panels may be 200 or more feet from the controlled exit device, the MLR's ability to handle longer wire runs without performance degradation is a real engineering advantage. For healthcare and education applications where noise reduction matters, the quieter motor actuation versus the audible solenoid click is a specified performance requirement, not just a preference.

What the Retrofit Kit Includes
The C-RPMLR-K ships as a complete replacement channel assembly with the motorized mechanism pre-installed. The installer removes the existing device channel from the installed Apex 2000 exit device and replaces it with the MLR channel from the kit. No specialized tools beyond standard installation equipment are required.
The kit integrates with existing Precision Apex 2000 Series access control wiring infrastructure, making it compatible with the security frameworks already in place in most institutional buildings running Precision exit hardware.
Compatibility and Ordering Notes
The C-RPMLR-K is compatible with the full Precision Apex 2000 Series exit device lineup - rim (2100 Series), surface vertical rod (2200 Series), and related configurations.
One important ordering note: when the C-RPMLR-K is installed on an Apex 2000 exit device that currently has hex key dogging or cylinder dogging, a blank hinge filler should be ordered at the same time. MLR is not compatible with mechanical dogging. The blank filler covers the dogging port cleanly after the dogging function is eliminated.
If the device being upgraded currently has ELR (solenoid-based), the MLR retrofit replaces the solenoid mechanism. The existing outside trim and strike are unaffected by the conversion.
