PHI Precision FL2103 Fire Rated Apex Rim Exit Device - Wide Stile

The PHI Precision FL2103 is the fire-listed version of the Precision Apex 2000 wide stile rim exit device in function "03" - key retracts latchbolt. It's the exit device specified on fire-rated egress doors where both a UL fire listing and outside keyed entry are required. The touchbar from inside provides unrestricted panic egress at all times. A key from outside retracts the latch bolt for entry when the outside lever is locked. The device carries a UL listing for both panic hardware and fire exit hardware under ANSI A156.3 Grade 1.

This is the most widely specified configuration in the FL2100 Series because most commercial fire-rated egress doors need both functions: fire compliance and keyed outside access.

FL2103 vs Standard 2103: The Fire Listing Is the Difference

The standard 2103 and the FL2103 are the same Apex 2000 device in the same function "03" with the same architectural construction. The only differences are the fire listing and the dogging capability.

The standard 2103 includes hex key dogging standard - a hex wrench holds the touchbar depressed for free-passage periods during business hours. The door operates as a push/pull door without activating the latch. The FL2103 has no dogging option. Fire-rated exit hardware must self-close and positively latch on every single door cycle per NFPA 80. A fire door that's been dogged open or has its latch mechanism bypassed is a code violation. If the opening needs dogging, specify the standard 2103 and confirm with the AHJ that a non-fire-rated device is acceptable.

FL2103 vs FL2101: Key Entry vs Exit Only

Both the FL2101 and FL2103 are fire-listed Apex 2000 rim exit devices. Both have no dogging. The function code is the difference.

The FL2101 is function "01" - exit only. The outside of the door has a cover plate. No outside entry capability without a separate key cylinder added to the plate prep. Specify FL2101 for fire-rated emergency egress doors designed as one-way exits with no re-entry.

The FL2103 is function "03" - key retracts latchbolt. The outside has lever trim (ordered separately from Parts and Accessories) and a key cylinder. Specify FL2103 for fire-rated doors that are also main building entries or secondary entries where keyed outside access is required alongside fire compliance.

If the fire-rated door serves both as an emergency exit and a normal daily entry for key-holders - stairwell access doors, corridor main doors, fire-rated suite entries - the FL2103 is the correct specification.

Field-Selectable Functions Across the FL2100 Series

The FL2103 ships in function "03" as standard, but the same device body can be field-converted to any of the other FL2100 Series functions: FL2101 (exit only, cover plate), FL2102 (exit only, dummy trim prep), FL2105 (key locks/unlocks thumbpiece), FL2114 (no cylinder, lever always active), FL2115 (no cylinder, thumbpiece always active).

If the hardware schedule changes during construction and the fire-rated door needs a different function than originally specified, the FL2103 on site can be reconfigured in the field to match the revised schedule without replacing the device. This is the same field-selectable function flexibility as the standard 2103 - the fire listing doesn't limit the function options.

Outside Trim: Order Separately From Parts and Accessories

The FL2103 ships as the inside device only. Outside lever or pull trim is required for function "03" - a key cylinder must be in the outside trim to provide the key retracts latchbolt function. Order the correct trim function ("03" key retracts latch or other) alongside the FL2103 device.
