PHI Precision E2103 Apex Electric Lock/Unlock Rim Exit Device, Key Retracts Latchbolt

The PHI Precision E2103 is the electric lock/unlock version of the Apex 2000 Series wide stile rim exit device. The "E" prefix means this device has an integrated 24VDC solenoid that remotely controls whether the outside trim can operate. The inside panic bar always retracts the latch and provides unrestricted egress - that never changes. What the solenoid controls is outside entry: specifically, whether the outside lever trim can retract the latch when someone approaches from outside.

The E2103 also includes a built-in SPDT (single pole double throw) switch that monitors the outside trim state and reports it back to the access control panel in real time. The panel knows whether the outside trim is currently locked or unlocked without a separate door status sensor.

How the Electric Lock/Unlock Function Works

The E2103 ships as Fail Secure (FSE) by default. In Fail Secure mode, power applied to the solenoid unlocks the outside trim. Power removed locks the outside trim. When the access control system grants access - from a card reader, keypad, or remote signal - the panel energizes the solenoid, which unlocks the outside lever so it can retract the latch when turned. When access is denied or the panel de-energizes the solenoid, the outside lever locks and won't operate the latch.

A key from outside still retracts the latch bolt regardless of the solenoid's locked/unlocked state. The "Key Retracts Latchbolt" designation means a cylinder in the outside trim provides mechanical key override - turn the key and the latch retracts even when the electric solenoid has locked the lever. This is the correct specification for applications where a master key override must always work independently of power or access control system state.

The E2103 is field-convertible to Fail Safe (FS) mode. In Fail Safe, power holds the outside trim locked - the solenoid energizes to lock, de-energizes to unlock. Fail Safe is the required specification for fire-rated egress doors where the outside trim must be freely operable when power fails or a fire alarm activates. Confirm the correct fail mode with the AHJ before installation.

E2103 vs 2103: When to Specify the Electric Version

The standard 2103 is a mechanical-only device - no solenoid, no electric control. The inside functions and field-selectable outside trim functions are all mechanical. The 2103 is correct when no remote access control is required and outside entry is handled entirely by key and lever.

The E2103 is correct when the opening needs remote electronic access control - when a card reader, keypad, or remote button should grant and deny outside entry without physical key involvement for every access event. Critical: Outside Trim Must Be Function "08" or "14"

The E2103 requires specific outside trim. Function "03" trim (Key Retracts Latchbolt - the standard trim used on the mechanical 2103) is not compatible with the E2103. The E-series electric device requires:

Function "08" trim (4908A/B/C/D - Key Controls Lever): Key locks and unlocks the outside lever independently of the solenoid. Used when key override of the electric lock is the required outside entry method.

Function "14" trim (4914A/B/C/D - Lever Always Active): No cylinder. The outside lever is always free to operate. The solenoid controls whether that lever operation actually retracts the latch. Used when access control handles all outside entry and no key override is needed on the trim itself.

Specifying function "03" trim (4903A/B/C/D) on the E2103 is an incompatible configuration. Confirm the outside trim function code against the E-series requirements before ordering trim separately.
