The PHI Precision FL2110VI x 4908A is the classroom intruder lockdown configuration of the Precision Apex 2000 Series wide stile rim exit device in a fire-rated assembly. This is not a standard classroom lock. The distinction is critical for school safety hardware specifications, and understanding the difference between a standard classroom function and the classroom intruder function is what separates hardware that meets modern K-12 security requirements from hardware that doesn't.

Standard Classroom Function vs Classroom Intruder Function

A standard classroom lock - including the FL2108 - allows the teacher to lock the corridor-side lever from outside the classroom using a key in the corridor. During a lockdown, this requires the teacher to open the door and expose themselves to the hallway to lock the door. On an exit device, this is function "08" - key controls the outside lever, teacher must be in the corridor to use that key.

The classroom intruder function (function "10" - Double Cylinder, Inside Key Locks/Unlocks Lever) eliminates that exposure. The teacher inserts a key from inside the classroom and locks the inside lever mechanism. When the inside lever is locked, the outside lever is simultaneously locked. The door is secured without ever opening it. The teacher never steps into the corridor.

The VI Indicator: Knowing the Lock State From Outside

The "VI" in the model number stands for Vacant/Indicator. A small indicator window on the outside of the device shows whether the inside lever mechanism is currently in the locked or unlocked state. In a school setting, the indicator lets an administrator or first responder approaching the corridor side of the door see immediately whether the classroom has been locked down - without trying the lever or knocking. A green or unoccupied indicator means the lever is free; a locked or occupied indicator means the inside key has secured the room.

This is the same indicator principle as the privacy indicator on restroom locks, applied to a classroom egress door context.

4908A Outside Trim: Key Controls Lever, Lever Design A

The 4908A is the outside trim paired with the FL2110VI device. Function "08" on the trim means the outside key controls the outside lever - locking and unlocking the outside lever independently. Combined with the inside function "10" (inside key also controls lever state), both the inside teacher and outside administrators with keys can control the lockdown state of the door from their respective sides.

The escutcheon trim with Lever Design A provides the standard architectural lever appearance from the corridor side.

Fire Rated: No Dogging, Self-Closing Every Cycle

The FL designation means this device carries a UL fire listing for fire exit hardware. No dogging - the door must self-close and positively latch on every cycle per NFPA 80. On a classroom corridor door that is also fire-rated (which most are in modern school construction), the FL2110VI is the correct specification. A non-fire-rated device on a fire-labeled door is a code violation regardless of the lockdown function.

Ordering: Handing Is Required
