Precision 2201 Apex Vertical Rod Exit Device - Exit Only, Cover Plate Prep

The Precision 2201 is the exit-only configuration of the Precision Apex 2000 Series wide stile Surface Vertical Rod (SVR) exit device. Where the 2103 rim device uses a single latch point at the device body, the 2201 SVR uses two - a top latch bolt in the door frame header and a bottom bolt in the floor - connected by surface-mounted vertical rods running up and down the door face from the device channel. One push on the touchbar retracts both bolts simultaneously. The door opens. Both bolts re-engage when the door closes.

Why Two-Point Latching Matters

A rim exit device catches the door at one point - the device body's rim latch into a frame-mounted keeper. On a standard 7-foot door with a solid hollow metal frame, this is adequate. On an 8, 10, or 12-foot door, the door face has significantly more surface area to flex under wind load, thermal expansion, or deliberate force. Single-point latching at the top leaves the bottom of the door free to swing or be forced. Two-point latching fixes both the top and bottom simultaneously.

The 2201 SVR is specified on tall commercial doors in lobbies, warehouses, institutional corridor egress doors, and any opening where the door height or structural load requires two-point engagement. The SVR mechanism also provides better resistance to door warping - a warped door that no longer perfectly aligns with a single rim keeper may still latch cleanly when both a top and bottom bolt independently find their strikes.

Top and Bottom Bolt: Different Materials and Throws

The top latchbolt is 3/4-inch throw stainless steel with a deadlocking plunger - the same latchbolt specification as the 2103 rim device. It engages the S300 surface-applied stainless steel strike in the door frame header.

The bottom bolt is different: 5/8-inch throw, steel plated, with independent action and an adjustment range that accommodates a 3/4-inch door undercut. "Independent action" means the bottom bolt operates and adjusts independently of the top bolt mechanism - it seats correctly in its floor strike even when the floor level varies slightly or the door has a custom undercut. The bottom strike is the S460 flush-mounted steel plate in the floor, powder coated.

Door Height Selection: 7, 8, 10, or 12 Feet

The 2201 ships in four door height configurations matching the vertical rod length to the door. Select the correct height in order - the rod cannot be extended after the fact without replacing the rod assembly.

7-foot configuration covers standard commercial door heights. 8-foot covers taller commercial and institutional doors. 10-foot covers high-bay and warehouse applications. 12-foot covers the tallest commercial door openings, with one important exception: the 12-foot top rod is not available in the FL (fire-rated) version.

LBR - Less Bottom Rod

The LBR option ships the device without the bottom rod and bottom bolt assembly. Use this when:

The floor condition prevents installing a bottom floor anchor - raised access flooring, under-floor mechanical systems, or special flooring that can't be penetrated. The ADA threshold configuration conflicts with a flush-mounted bottom strike. The specific door application only requires top latching despite using SVR hardware.

Specify "LBR" at the Rod field in the ordering form if the bottom rod is not needed. The device operates with top-only latching in this configuration.

2201 vs 2203: Exit Only vs Keyed Entry

The 2201 is function "01" - exit only. The outside has a cover plate, no outside grip or lever. Paired with a separate product page for the 2203 (function "03" - key retracts latchbolt with outside trim). If the opening needs outside keyed entry alongside the SVR latching, order the 2203. If the opening is a one-way emergency exit with no outside re-entry capability, the 2201 is correct.
