Precision 2202 Apex Vertical Rod Exit Device - Exit Only, Dummy Trim Prep

The Precision 2202 is the Dummy Trim Prep version of the Precision Apex 2000 Series wide stile Surface Vertical Rod (SVR) exit device. It's the same two-point latching device as the 2201 - top latch in the frame header, bottom bolt in the floor, surface vertical rods connecting both to the device body - with one specific difference at the outside of the door. The 2202 is prepped for dummy trim. The 2201 is prepped for a cover plate. That's the entire distinction between the two models.

Dummy trim prep means the outside face of the door is configured to accept a 1700 Series pull trim in the dummy (non-functional grip) configuration. The 1702A, 1702B, or 1702C dummy pull trim mounts in the prepped opening, giving the outside door face a physical grip handle without adding any cylinder, any key function, or any mechanical connection to the latch bolts. The grip is there to pull the door. It doesn't retract the latch. From outside, the door looks like it has an operable pull trim entry point. From the device side, it's still exit-only - the panic touchbar opens the door from inside, and the two-point SVR latch engages on every close.

When 2202 vs 2201: Visual Continuity Without Key Access

The 2201 (cover plate) is the right specification when the outside of the door should look closed and hardware-minimal - no handle, nothing to grab, a clean plate covering the trim area. Emergency stair exits, fire egress corridors, and secondary exit doors where outside re-entry is never intended typically specify the 2201 or similar cover plate configuration.

The 2202 (dummy trim prep) is the right specification when adjacent doors have pull trim handles and visual hardware consistency across the opening is the design requirement - even when the specific opening is exit-only. A set of double doors where one leaf is an active entry with 1703A pull trim (key retracts latch) and the other leaf is exit-only might specify the 2202 on the exit-only leaf so the outside face shows a matching grip on both leaves. From outside, both doors look the same. Inside, only the active leaf allows outside entry.

The 2202 is also the specification when electronic access control (ELR/MLR) will be added later or is present - the ELR retracts the latch electrically, and the 1702 dummy grip on the outside provides the physical pull point without requiring a separate grip handle installation. Surface Vertical Rods: Two-Point Latching on Tall Doors

The SVR mechanism on the 2202 is identical to the 2201. Surface vertical rods run from the device body up to the top latch and down to the bottom bolt. The top latchbolt is 3/4-inch throw stainless steel with a deadlocking plunger, engaging the S300 surface-applied stainless steel strike in the frame header. The bottom bolt is 5/8-inch throw steel plated with independent action, engaging the S460 flush-mounted floor strike. Both bolts retract simultaneously when the inside touchbar is pushed.

Door height selection determines the rod lengths. Order the correct height at time of purchase:

7-foot for standard commercial door heights. 8-foot for taller institutional doors. 10-foot for high-bay and warehouse applications. 12-foot for the tallest commercial openings - with the same limitation as the 2201: the 12-foot top rod is not available in the FL fire-rated configuration.

The LBR (Less Bottom Rod) option removes the bottom rod and bolt assembly when floor conditions - raised access floors, special flooring, or ADA threshold constraints - prevent installing the S460 floor strike.

Outside Trim: Ordered Separately

The 2202 ships as the inside device with the outside prepped for 1702 dummy trim. The trim itself - 1702A, 1702B, or 1702C depending on the required grip design - is ordered separately from the 1700 Series Pull Trim section. Match the grip design letter across the project. If adjacent active entry doors use 1703A (key retracts latch, Grip Design A), order 1702A (dummy, Grip Design A) for the 2202 so the grip profile is consistent.
