Precision 2401 Apex Rim Exit Device, Exit Only, Cover Plate Prep - Narrow Stile

The Precision 2401 is the exit-only configuration of the Precision Apex 2000 Series in the 2400 narrow stile rim exit device line. The narrow stile designation is the defining specification on this product - it's what separates the 2400 Series from the 2100 wide stile series entirely. If the door is an aluminum storefront door with narrow vertical stiles, the 2401 is the correct Apex exit device. If the door is a wide stile hollow metal or heavy commercial door, the 2103 is the correct device.

Getting the stile width right at the specification stage matters because the device body width, the touchbar dimensions, the trim compatibility, and the standard strike package all differ between narrow and wide stile configurations. A narrow stile device ordered for a wide stile opening, or vice versa, doesn't fit and can't be field-modified to fit.

What Narrow Stile Means

Stile width refers to the width of the vertical door member - the side of the door where the exit device mounts. Narrow stile aluminum storefront doors have vertical stile widths typically in the 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch range. Wide stile doors - heavy hollow metal commercial doors, architectural wood doors, and heavy-duty commercial entrance doors - have stile widths of 3-1/2 inches and above.

The 2400 Series is engineered for the narrow stile door. The device body is sized to fit within the narrow stile geometry. The touchbar spans the door width at the correct height for these door systems. The trim compatibility uses 2900 Series narrow stile trim (not the 4900 wide stile lever trim or 1700 pull trim used on the 2100 and 2200 Series devices).

Narrow stile aluminum storefront doors are standard on retail storefronts, commercial lobby glass entrances, office building glass doors, curtain wall systems, and glass vestibule entries. If the building entrance uses aluminum framing with glass panels and narrow vertical members, the 2401 is the narrow stile Apex exit device for those openings. Strike Package: S988 vs S300 - Why the Difference

Standard narrow stile exit device packaging uses the S988 Black Powder Coated Stainless Steel Roller Strike for aluminum door applications. This differs from the wide stile 2103 which ships with the S300 Investment Cast Stainless Steel surface-applied strike as standard.

The S988 roller strike is designed for aluminum door frames and glass entrances - the roller engagement accommodates the slightly different geometry of aluminum door frames compared to hollow metal. For hollow metal door or mullion applications with the 2401, the S458 is available as the optional strike.

Exit Only Function with Cover Plate Outside

The 2401 ships in function "01" - exit only with cover plate prep. The outside of the door has a flat cover plate covering the trim preparation area. No pull grip, no lever, no cylinder. The door can only be opened from outside if the latch is retracted by an electrical option (ELR or MLR) or if someone on the inside has opened it.

This is the correct specification for secondary exits, emergency egress doors, and service exits on aluminum storefront systems where outside re-entry through this door is not part of normal building operations.

Electrical Options: Available on This Model

The 2401 offers four electrical options selectable at time of order - a feature set that's built into the narrow stile 2400 Series ordering page directly.

ELR: Electric Latch Retraction - continuous duty solenoid retracts the latch bolt on access control signal. Works with card readers, push buttons, automatic door operators, and fire alarm systems. Correct for openings that need electronic access control for outside entry.

MLR: Motorized Latch Retraction - motor-driven latch retraction in place of solenoid. Lower current draw, quieter operation, longer wire run capability. The upgrade from ELR for large facilities with long wiring runs or noise-sensitive environments.

TS: Touchbar Monitoring Switch - a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch that monitors touchbar state and interfaces with one external component. Requires a 2-wire power transfer not furnished standard.

DE: Delayed Egress - a self-contained delayed egress system providing 15 or 30 seconds of egress delay with audible alarm and remote monitoring capability. Correct for healthcare, assisted living, and controlled egress applications where unauthorized exit must be alerted and delayed.
