The Precision 2403CD is the Cylinder Dogging version of the Apex 2000 Series narrow stile rim exit device in function "03" - Key Retracts Latchbolt. Two specifications in the model number define this product precisely: the narrow stile construction for aluminum storefront and glass entrance doors, and the "CD" Cylinder Dogging feature that replaces the standard hex key dogging method with key-controlled dogging through the outside cylinder.

This is the standard main entrance exit device specification for high-traffic commercial aluminum storefronts. The outside key provides two operations: entry (key retracts latch for access) and dogging control (quarter turn of the key dogs and undogs the device). No separate hex tool required. The building key does both jobs.

What Cylinder Dogging Changes

Standard Apex exit devices include hex key dogging - a hex wrench inserted into the dogging port holds the touchbar depressed, converting the door to push/pull free-passage operation during business hours. The hex wrench lives with facilities staff and gets used twice a day on every dogged opening: once in the morning to dog the device for free passage, once at closing to undog it and restore the panic egress latch function.

Cylinder Dogging replaces the hex wrench with the outside key cylinder. A quarter turn of the key in the outside cylinder dogs the device. Another quarter turn undogs it. The dogging key can match the building master key system - no separate hex tool, no tool storage issue, no question of who has the hex wrench when the morning opening crew arrives.

Function "03" - Key Retracts Latchbolt

The 2403CD ships in function "03" standard - but the page covers the full narrow stile function range (2401-2415), all fields selectable. Function "03" is the correct specification when outside key entry is needed: someone outside inserts a key, turns it, the latch bolt retracts, and the door opens. The inside panic touch bar always exists freely.

This is the primary entrance function on exit devices. Not all access scenarios need key entry - some narrow stile storefront doors are exit-only (2401) or controlled exclusively by electronic access (ELR or MLR). When keyed access is the primary outside entry method, function "03" is correct.

2403CD vs 2401: Entry vs Exit Only

The 2401 (exit only, cover plate) has no outside entry capability. The 2403CD (key retracts latch, cylinder dogging) provides keyed outside entry and key-controlled dogging. Specify the 2401 for secondary exits and emergency egress doors where re-entry is not needed. Specify the 2403CD for main entrances where staff use keys for entry and dogging management daily.

Narrow Stile and the S988 Standard Strike

The 2403CD is part of the 2400 narrow stile series - designed for aluminum storefront doors with narrow vertical stile widths. The standard strike is the S988 Stainless Steel Roller Strike, Black Powder Coated, for aluminum door frame applications. The 2403CD accepts four factory-installed electrical upgrades at time of order: ELR (Electric Latch Retraction, +$588.81), MLR (Motorized Latch Retraction, TS (Touchbar Monitoring Switch, +$168.15), and DE.
