About this item
The Schlage A10S is a Grade 2 passage knob lock in the Orbit (ORB) knob style, conforming to ANSI function F75. Both knobs are always unlocked. There's no cylinder, no key, and no locking mechanism on either side of the door. The A-Series platform has been in continuous production since 1925, and the A10S carries the same core design principles: cold-rolled steel housing with corrosion treatment, solid brass 6-pin cylinders where applicable, wrought brass or bronze exposed trim, and no exposed mounting screws. Certified to ANSI 156.2, 1996, Series 4000 Grade 2. UL listed for all functions up to 3-hour fire door assemblies. Commercial 3-year limited warranty; full mechanical lifetime warranty for residential use.
Why the Schlage A-Series has been the industry standard since 1925
The A-Series was invented in 1925 and has been in continuous production longer than virtually any other commercial knob lock line in the US market. That continuity isn't accidental. The design reached a level of dimensional and mechanical precision early that made it the basis for ANSI cylindrical lock standards that the entire industry now follows. The 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" door range, the 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" backset options, the 1" x 2-1/4" latch face, and the square corner T-strike with dust box - these are specifications that became the commercial standard because of Schlage A-Series adoption, not the other way around.
The housing is cold-rolled steel with corrosion treatment for normal atmospheric conditions. The exposed trim is wrought brass, bronze, or stainless steel. The knob itself is zinc-based, plated to match the trim material and finish. No exposed mounting screws are visible on the installed unit. These aren't features added to a modern update - they're original design elements that have remained unchanged because they work.
ANSI F75 passage function and where the A10S is specified
Passage function means both knobs retract the latch freely at all times. No key, no push button, no thumbturn. The door latches when it closes and opens when anyone turns either knob. This is the correct function for interior hallways, closets, pantries, mechanical rooms, and other doors where latching is needed but access control is not. The A10S is rated for heavy duty residential and light to medium duty commercial applications, which covers both sides of the residential-commercial divide that many passage knobs don't address explicitly in their certification.
The 1/2" throw latch is reversible for right and left hand doors. The T-strike ships standard with a dust box, which keeps the strike pocket from collecting debris on interior door installations. The latch face is 1" x 2-1/4", which is the standard commercial latch face dimension matching the ANSI A115.1 door prep for cylindrical locks.
Cylinder access, finishes, and the Orbit knob profile
On A-Series knob locks that include a cylinder (entry, storeroom, and classroom functions), the cylinder is a solid brass 6-pin design with a key-removable outside knob for easy cylinder replacement in the field. On the A10S passage function, no cylinder is used on either side, so the knob mounts directly without a cylinder housing. The key-removable knob design means that if the door function ever needs to change to a keyed configuration, the knob assembly can be swapped without removing the lockset chassis from the door.
Six finishes are available: 626 satin chrome, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, and 643e aged bronze. The Orbit knob profile is a round, smooth-bodied design suited to commercial and transitional architectural environments. For the full range of A-Series Grade 2 functions including privacy, entrance, classroom, and storeroom configurations in the Orbit and other knob styles, browse the Schlage A Series Grade 2 catalog. Select your finish and backset when ordering. Confirm door thickness falls within the 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" standard range before specifying the A10S.
