About this item
The Schlage A30D is a Grade 2 patio lock in the Orbit (ORB) knob style, conforming to ANSI function F77. The inside push button locks the outside knob. Two actions release that lockout automatically: turning the inside knob from inside, or closing the door. The door-close auto-release is the defining feature of patio function and the key reason it's specified for residential exterior doors and light commercial doors where permanent lock-out is not acceptable. No key override and no outside emergency release slot are included on either side. Rated to ANSI 156.2, 1996, Series 4000 Grade 2. UL listed for all functions up to 3-hour fire door assemblies.
What ANSI F77 patio function is and how it differs from privacy
Patio function and privacy function are both push-button locking mechanisms, but they operate differently in one critical area: what resets the button. On a privacy lock, the button stays locked until the inside lever or knob is turned to release it. The door closing does not reset a privacy lock. On a patio lock under ANSI F77, both the inside knob rotation and the door closing reset the push button and return the outside knob to its unlocked state.
The practical significance is lock-out prevention. If someone locks the push button on a patio door and then closes the door from outside without a key, the act of closing the door itself releases the button. The outside knob is unlocked again when the door latches. This makes patio function appropriate for residential bedroom doors to patio decks, screened-in porch entries, pool house doors, and any residential or light commercial application where temporary occupancy privacy is needed but the risk of accidental lock-out from the outside is unacceptable.
No emergency outside release on patio function and why that matters for specification
Privacy function knob locks include an emergency release slot on the outside knob face that accepts a coin or a thin tool to release the inside button from outside without a key. Patio function does not include this feature. Because the door-close auto-release already prevents standard lock-out scenarios, the emergency outside release isn't specified for patio function. This distinction matters when specifying hardware for occupancy types where an emergency outside release is required by building code. For those applications, a privacy or entrance function is the correct specification. For residential and light commercial patio doors, the A30D's auto-release behavior makes the lock-out scenario highly unlikely in normal use.
A-Series construction, finishes, and installation specs
The A30D uses the same A-Series platform as every other function in this line: cold-rolled steel housing with corrosion treatment, wrought brass or bronze exposed trim, zinc-based knob plated to match the trim, no exposed mounting screws, and 400,000 cycle ANSI Grade 2 performance. The 1/2" throw latch measures 1" x 2-1/4" and is reversible for both right and left hand doors. Standard backset is 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". Door thickness range is 1-3/8" to 1-7/8". The T-strike ships standard with a dust box, and an ANSI 4-7/8" strike is available as an option.
Six finishes are available: 626 satin chrome, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, and 625 bright chrome. Commercial warranty is 3-year limited; residential warranty is full mechanical lifetime.
