About this item
The Schlage A70PD is a Grade 2 classroom cylindrical lock in the Plymouth (PLY) knob style, conforming to ANSI function F84. The outside knob is controlled entirely by key: a key in the outside cylinder locks and unlocks it, and the knob does nothing without the key. The inside knob is always free and always provides immediate egress regardless of the outside knob's state. Certified to ANSI 156.2, 1996, Series 4000 Grade 2. UL listed for all functions up to 3-hour fire door assemblies. Commercial 3-year limited warranty; full mechanical lifetime warranty for residential use. Five finishes available including satin stainless steel.
How ANSI F84 classroom function works on the A70PD
Classroom function is one of the most precisely specified cylindrical lock functions in the commercial hardware vocabulary, and understanding how it operates matters when selecting the right lock for an opening. Under ANSI F84, the outside knob is always rigid unless a key is actively inserted and turned. Turning the key retracts the latch and allows entry. When the key is removed, the outside knob returns to its locked, rigid state immediately. There is no push button, no thumbturn, and no inside mechanism that changes the outside knob state.
The inside knob is always free. It always retracts the latch, always allows egress, and is never affected by the key operation on the outside. A teacher or authorized keyholder can lock the room from the corridor by inserting a key and turning it, then withdrawing the key. The room is locked. Anyone inside can still exit at any time using the inside knob. This is the function pattern that makes classroom locks compliant with life-safety egress requirements while still providing controlled outside access.
Cylinder options, keying, and the key-removable outside knob
The A70PD ships with a 6-pin solid brass cylinder keyed to 5 tumblers as the standard configuration, with two nickel silver keys included per lock. The key-removable outside knob design is a practical field advantage: the outside knob assembly can be removed without special tools to access the cylinder for rekeying or replacement, which reduces service time compared to lock designs that require full disassembly for cylinder access.
Keying options at ordering include standard keyed different, keyed alike (KA), master keyed (MK), grand master keyed, and construction keyed configurations. Interchangeable core (IC) is also available for facilities running IC master key systems. Master keying and construction keying are particularly relevant for educational facilities, where a single master key covering all classroom doors and a different construction master used during building and renovation phases are standard specification requirements. For available IC core options and compatible key blanks, browse the cylinders, cores, and keys section on this site.
Plymouth knob style, A-Series construction, and finish options
The Plymouth (PLY) knob profile is a round, smooth-bodied knob with a slightly tapered waist, suited for traditional and transitional architectural environments in educational, healthcare, government, and residential buildings. The A-Series housing is cold-rolled steel with corrosion treatment for normal atmospheric conditions. Exposed trim is wrought brass, bronze, or stainless steel. The knob is zinc-based, plated to match the trim material and finish. No exposed mounting screws are present on the installed unit. The platform meets or exceeds 400,000 cycles under ANSI Grade 2 requirements.
Five finishes are available: 626 satin chrome, 605 bright brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, and 630 satin stainless steel. For the full range of A-Series Grade 2 functions in the Plymouth and other knob styles, browse the Schlage A Series Grade 2 catalog. The complete Schlage knob locks section covers all Schlage knob lock lines available on this site.
Select your finish, backset, and keying option when ordering. Specify IC if the facility runs an interchangeable core master key system. Confirm door thickness falls within the 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" range before specifying the A70PD.
