What makes the D212 deadbolt different from the D211 and how to choose the right backset
The D212 and D211 are the same deadbolt in two backset configurations. The D212 uses a 2-3/4-inch backset, which is the distance from the door edge to the center of the bored hole. The D211 uses a 2-3/8-inch backset. Everything else is identical: Grade 2 certification, ANSI E0152 function, hardened bolt with anti-saw pin, face plate dimensions, strike package, and installation method.
The 2-3/4-inch backset is the standard commercial dimension. Most commercial hollow metal doors, solid wood entry doors, and institutional door assemblies are bored to the 2-3/4-inch dimension as the default. If the door is an existing installation, measure from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole before ordering to confirm which backset is in the prep. What the hardened anti-saw pin insert does on the D212 bolt
The 1-inch throw bolt on the D212 contains a hardened steel insert pin that rotates freely when a saw or drill engages it. Sawing attacks on deadbolts work by cutting through the exposed bolt length while the bolt is thrown. A standard steel bolt can be cut through if enough force and time is applied. The anti-saw pin spins inside the bolt cross-section when a cutting tool contacts it, preventing the tool from gripping and cutting through the bolt. ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 2 is the performance tier for medium-traffic commercial applications. It covers deadbolts installed on suite entry doors in office buildings, apartment unit doors, break room and washroom access doors, storage room doors, and secondary perimeter doors where the daily cycle count and forced-entry exposure are moderate rather than high. Grade 1 is the correct specification for high-traffic institutional doors, main building entries, and any door on a hardware schedule that explicitly calls for Grade 1. Grade 2 is the practical specification for the large category of doors that need a reliable keyed deadbolt without the cost and weight of Grade 1 hardware.
