About this item

The PHI Precision 4903A is the Lever Design "A" outside trim in function "03" (Key Retracts Latchbolt) for Precision's Apex 2000 Series wide stile exit devices. It mounts on the outside of the door and controls how outside entry works when the inside panic bar is already handling egress. The lever on the outside is cast or forged - not stamped, not extruded - matching the material quality of the Apex 2000 device it pairs with.

What "Key Retracts Latchbolt" Actually Means

Function "03" is the standard entry trim for exit devices. Here's what happens from each side of the door.

From inside: Pushing the panic bar always retracts the latch bolt and opens the door. The inside function doesn't change based on outside trim selection - panic egress is always unrestricted.

From outside with the lever free: Turning the outside lever retracts the latch bolt and opens the door. No key needed.

From outside with the lever locked (based on the device function set on the inside): The lever won't retract the latch by turning alone. Inserting the key in the outside cylinder and turning it directly retracts the latch bolt, allowing the door to push open regardless of the lever lock state.

This is why function "03" is called "key retracts latchbolt" rather than "key controls lever." The key doesn't toggle the lever's ability to operate - it bypasses the lever entirely and mechanically retracts the latch through the cylinder. One key motion, the door opens. This is the correct trim for standard commercial entries where authorized users need key access and the device's inside function controls the lever lock state. For all PHI Precision exit device trims and accessories, browse our exit hardware catalog.

4903 vs 4908 vs 4914: Choosing the Right Function

All three trims have a lever on the outside of the door. The difference is how that lever and the cylinder interact.

4903A (this product) - Key Retracts Latchbolt: Key opens the door directly. Lever operates when unlocked. Correct for standard office entries, suite doors, and commercial exits where key-in opens regardless of lever state.

4908A - Key Controls Lever: The key locks and unlocks the liver's ability to operate. This is the classroom/lockdown function - when the lever is locked by key, neither key nor lever opens the door without a physical turn of the lever lock. Correct for classroom doors requiring lockdown capability.

4914A - Lever Always Active: No cylinder. The outside lever is always free and always retracts the latch. Correct for free-passage doors where no outside key control is needed.

Confirm the required outside trim function against the hardware schedule before ordering. Function cannot be changed in the field on these trims - the cylinder prep and internal mechanism are function-specific.

Lever Design A vs B vs C vs D

The letter suffix designates lever shape only. All four designs (A, B, C, D) are available in function "03" (4903A, 4903B, 4903C, 4903D) and carry the same specifications. Lever Design A is the standard profile. B, C, and D offer alternative lever shapes for projects where the architectural lever profile needs to match adjacent hardware in the building. Confirm which lever design the hardware schedule specifies before ordering - designs cannot be swapped in the field.

Handing: Required at Order

The 4903A requires handing specified at time of order. Choose RHR (Right Hand Reverse Bevel) or LHR (Left Hand Reverse Bevel). For exit device outside trim, "reverse bevel" means the outside of the door (the push side) is the keyed side - the lever trim mounts on the side you push to exit the building.

Right hand reverse (RHR): Hinges are on the right when you face the outside (keyed side) of the door.

Left hand reverse (LHR): Hinges are on the left when you face the outside of the door.

Cylinder Option

The 4903A ships in three cylinder configurations. No Cylinder is the standard - the trim includes the lever and escutcheon but no cylinder. The buyer supplies the rim cylinder from their existing key program. Rim Cylinder adds a standard rim cylinder in the SCC (Schlage C Compatible) keyway or as-specified. IC Rim Cylinder adds an IC rim cylinder for buildings running SFIC (Best, Falcon, Arrow compatible) programs.
