About this item
The PHI Precision 4903D-630 is the Lever Design "D" outside trim in function "03" (Key Retracts Latchbolt) for Precision's Apex 2000 Series wide stile exit devices, supplied in 630 Satin Stainless Steel. The lever and escutcheon are castings or forgings - not stamped steel, not extruded aluminum - in the same architectural material quality as the Apex 2000 exit device it pairs with. ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 certified. Through-bolted to the door, covering both Type 161 (ANSI A115.2) and Type 86 (ANSI A115.1) door cutout preparations.
Lever Design D: When the Hardware Schedule Specifies It
The Precision 4900 Series offers four lever profiles - A, B, C, and D - across every trim function. All four carry the same Grade 1 certification, the same cast/forged construction, and the same compatibility with Apex 2000 wide stile devices. The letter designates the lever shape only.
Lever Design D is a contemporary profile. Where the hardware schedule calls specifically for Design D, the 4903D is the correct trim. Where the schedule doesn't specify a letter, confirm with the architect or specifier before ordering - the design distinction is permanent once the trim is installed and the lever style is visible from the building exterior.
On projects where the exit device trim must visually coordinate with adjacent cylindrical or mortise lever locks, the lever design selection matters for the completed appearance of the opening. A building specifying Design D levers on all locksets should carry Design D through the exit device trim as well. Mixing lever designs across an opening reads as a mismatched specification.
Design D is also available in other function trims within the 4900 Series: 4902D (dummy lever), 4903D (key retracts latch - this product), 4908D (key controls lever), and 4914D (lever always active). Specify the same letter suffix across all trim functions for a consistent lever appearance throughout the project. For all PHI Precision exit device trims, browse our exit hardware catalog.
630 Satin Stainless Steel: When This Finish Is the Right Call
Finish 630 is satin stainless steel - a brushed, non-reflective stainless surface that doesn't tarnish, doesn't require waxing or polishing, and holds up in coastal environments, high-humidity spaces, and facilities that use aggressive cleaning agents on hardware surfaces regularly.
Healthcare facilities specify 630 on exit device trims partly for hygiene and partly for durability. Brass and bronze finishes oxidize in sterile environments cleaned with bleach-based agents. Satin stainless doesn't. For hospital corridors, treatment areas, and medical office suite entries, 630 is the correct finish specification whether the trim is adjacent to other hardware or not.
Modern institutional and commercial projects specifying a stainless architectural palette - particularly buildings where the structural frame, door frames, or other hardware elements are stainless - carry 630 through the exit device trim consistently.
Other finishes are available on the 4903D but the -630 designation in this SKU indicates it's the standard warehouse finish for this lever design. Confirm the required finish against the hardware schedule before ordering.
Function "03" Key Retracts Latchbolt: Same Operation as 4903A
The function behavior on the 4903D-630 is identical to the 4903A - only the lever profile and finish differ. From outside: lever retracts latch when unlocked; key retracts latch directly when lever is locked. From inside: panic bar always retracts latch and exits freely.
Key retracts latchbolt differs from 4908D (key controls lever) in a critical way: on the 4903D, the key directly pulls back the latch regardless of lever position. On the 4908D, the key toggle determines whether the lever can operate. Specify 4903D for standard entry. Specify 4908D for lockdown-capable classroom or office entries.
