Precision 1701 Apex Exit Only Cover Plate

The Precision 1701 is the exit only cover plate in the Precision 1700 Series Pull Trim line for Apex 2000 and Olympian Series wide stile exit devices. It's a wrought plate that mounts on the outside of the door where pull trim or lever trim would otherwise go, covering the door preparation cleanly with no grip, no lever, and no cylinder - the correct specification for exit-only openings where no outside access is needed and a finished exterior appearance is required.

It's the least expensive item in the 1700 Pull Trim Series and the only option in that series with no functional hardware component. Every other 1700 Series model adds a grip handle to the plate. The 1701 is just the plate.

1700 Series vs 4900 Series: Pull Trim vs Lever Trim

This distinction matters before placing any Precision Apex outside trim order. The 4900 Series is lever trim - a lever handle on the outside escutcheon. The 1700 Series is pull trim - a grip handle on the outside plate. Both series mount on Precision Apex 2000 and Olympian wide stile exit devices. Both are through-bolted and cover the 161 (ANSI A115.2) and 86 (ANSI A115.1) door cutout preparations. The difference is the outside hardware style: lever for the 4900 Series, pull grip for the 1700 Series.

Hardware schedules typically specify which trim series by noting "lever trim" or "pull trim" alongside the function code. If the schedule shows a pull grip handle on the outside of the exit device door, the 1700 Series is correct. If it shows a lever, the 4900 Series is correct. The 1701 from the 1700 Series and the 4901 from the 4900 Series both serve the same exit-only function - the difference is that the 4900 Series cover plate would be paired alongside lever trim on adjacent openings, while the 1700 Series cover plate pairs alongside pull grip trim on adjacent openings. When to Specify the 1701 Over the 1702

Within the 1700 Pull Trim Series, the 1701 and 1702 are both exit-only options. The 1702A, 1702B, and 1702C are dummy trim - they add a decorative pull grip to the cover plate even though the grip doesn't function to open the door from outside. The grip gives the visual impression of an operable entry point.

The 1701 skips the grip entirely. The outside of the door has only the flush cover plate with no hardware element that suggests entry is possible. Specify the 1701 when the design intent is unambiguous - this door is an emergency exit only, no outside entry, and no visual invitation to try the outside should exist. Specify the 1702 when visual continuity with adjacent pull trim doors matters more than communicating exit-only status from outside.

Apex 2000 Compatibility and Prep Coverage

The 1701 is compatible with Precision 2100 Series rim exit devices and 2200 Series surface vertical rod (SVR) exit devices in wide stile configuration. It is not for narrow stile devices - narrow stile Apex openings use 2900 Series trim. It is not for 2300 Series mortise exit devices - those use M4900 Series trim.

The wrought plate covers the standard ANSI A115.2 (Type 161) cylindrical lock preparation and the ANSI A115.1 (Type 86) mortise lock preparation. Both are common commercial door prep standards. If the door has either of these preps at the outside trim location, the 1701 covers it cleanly.
