About this item

The Precision 1702A is the Exit Only Dummy Trim in Grip Design "A" from the 1700 Series Pull Trim line for Precision Apex 2000 and Olympian wide stile exit devices. It puts a physical pull grip on the outside of an exit device door without adding any mechanical capability for outside entry. The grip is a casting or extrusion - solid, architectural quality, matching the material standard of the rest of the Apex 2000 trim family. It's mounted on a wrought plate through-bolted to the door. From outside, the door looks like it has a fully functional pull trim. From inside, the exit device's panic bar is the only mechanism that retracts the latch.

What "Dummy Trim" Means on an Exit Device

"Dummy trim" in exit device specifications doesn't mean low-quality. It means the outside trim component - in this case a pull grip - performs no mechanical function on the latch bolt. The grip gives you something to grab when pulling the door. It doesn't retract the latch bolt, doesn't house a key cylinder, and doesn't connect to any part of the locking mechanism. The door cannot be pulled open from outside by the grip unless the latch is already retracted by another method.

That other method is where the 1702A fits into an access-controlled opening. When an electric latch retraction device (ELR or MLR) pulls the latch bolt back on an access control signal, the person outside can pull the door open using the 1702A grip. The grip is the ergonomic component. The access control system is the entry mechanism. They work together - the 1702A provides the pull point, not the access authorization.

1702A vs 1701 vs 1703A: Choosing the Right 1700 Series Trim

Three 1700 Series models handle exit-only and keyed-entry requirements differently.

The 1701 is a flat cover plate with no grip. Outside the door, there's nothing to grab. The door can only be opened by someone who already has it unlatched from inside or by a mechanical key through an added cylinder in the cover plate prep. Specify the 1701 when no outside grip should be present - the door should look hardware-minimal from outside.

The 1702A (this product) adds a decorative grip. Outside, the door has a pull handle. The grip provides ergonomic pull access and visual continuity with adjacent pull trim doors. No cylinder, no key function - the grip is non-functional for latch control. Specify the 1702A when outside entry is handled electronically (ELR, card reader) and a physical grip is needed for pulling, or when the door is dogged during business hours and outside pull access is sufficient during those hours.

The 1703A adds a key cylinder to the grip. The key retracts the latch bolt for keyed outside entry without electronic control. Specify the 1703A when key access from outside is required as the primary or backup entry method and no electronic access control is present or available.

Grip Design A vs B vs C

Three grip profiles are available: A, B, and C. All three carry the same specifications, the same material quality, the same function, and the same price point. The design designation identifies the grip shape and profile only. Confirm the hardware schedule's required grip design before ordering. On a project specifying Design A across the full 1700 Series pull trim line, specify 1702A here, 1703A for keyed entry openings, and 1705A for thumbpiece functions - the letter carries through all functions for visual consistency.
