About this item
The Accentra (Yale) 197 Series is a jimmy-proof deadlock for inswinging doors, also referenced as the Yale 197 or Yale jimmy-proof lock. The outside is furnished with a 5-pin rim cylinder (Yale 1109E). The inside operates by thumbturn: a 90-degree turn of the thumbturn locks or unlocks the deadbolt from the interior. The case is zinc alloy in sprayed brass finish with a 2-3/8-inch backset. Door thickness compatibility is 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches. Two keys (RB8) are included. For outswinging doors, the 197F with flat strike is the correct model. SKU: 197.
What sets the Yale 197 Series apart from the 197-1/4: thumbturn inside vs key inside
The 197 and the 197-1/4 are the same jimmy-proof deadlock body with one critical difference on the interior face. The 197 has a thumbturn on the interior: the occupant inside can lock or unlock the deadbolt with a 90-degree thumb turn without needing a key. The 197-1/4 has a fixed 3-pin brass cylinder on the interior, making it a double-cylinder deadlock where a key is required from both sides to operate the bolt.
The 197 is the correct specification when interior egress from the space must be possible without a key. On apartment entry doors, store entries, and interior commercial doors where the occupant needs to lock or unlock the bolt from inside without a key, the 197 thumbturn configuration is the appropriate choice. The 197-1/4 double-cylinder version applies on glass-panel doors or other installations where a thumbturn could be reached from the exterior through a compromised panel. For the 197-1/4 double-cylinder version, the Accentra Yale 197-1/4 Series jimmy-proof deadlock is also stocked. For the full range of auxiliary deadbolts, the auxiliary deadbolts section covers the available options.
How the jimmy-proof vertical bolt mechanism works on the Yale 197 Series
A jimmy-proof deadlock uses vertical bolts that drop into an interlocking strike mounted on the door frame, rather than a horizontal bolt that throws into a strike pocket in the frame. When the deadlock is engaged, the vertical bolts and the strike interlock in a configuration that resists spreading, prying, and sliding attacks that work against conventional horizontal rim deadbolts. Forcing a tool between the door edge and the frame to push back a standard horizontal bolt does not work against the interlocking geometry of the 197's vertical bolts.
This makes the 197 Series the correct specification for inswinging residential and light commercial doors where the door frame is accessible from the exterior and a conventional rim lock or surface deadbolt is considered vulnerable to pry or spread attacks. The rim installation also means no bored hole preparation is required in the door edge, making it suitable for older door stock that cannot accommodate standard deadbolt boring. For conventional bored deadbolts across all configurations, the cylindrical deadbolts catalog covers the available range.
Material, backset, case finish, and door thickness for the Accentra 197
The 197 case is zinc alloy with a sprayed brass finish as the only available option. The backset is 2-3/8 inches. Door thickness compatibility runs from 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches, which accommodates thin residential door stock, standard hollow metal commercial doors, and heavier solid core commercial doors within a single model. The 5-pin rim cylinder (1109E) on the outside determines the key profile and can be keyed into an existing master key system by a locksmith at the time of installation.
For key blanks and cylinders compatible with the Yale 1109E rim cylinder, the cylinders, cores, and keys section covers the available options. For the full commercial lock and hardware range at American Locksets, browse the commercial locks section.
Confirm the door swings inward before ordering. For outswinging doors, order the 197F with flat strike. Sprayed brass finish only. Two keys included.
