About this item
The Accentra (Yale) 197F is a jimmy-proof deadlock with a flat strike for outswinging doors, also referenced as the Yale 197F or 197f. The outside is furnished with a 5-pin rim cylinder (Yale 1109E). The inside operates by thumbturn: a 90-degree turn locks or unlocks the deadbolt from the interior without a key. The case is zinc alloy in sprayed brass finish with a 2-3/8-inch backset. Door thickness compatibility is 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches. Two keys (RB8) are included. SKU: 197F.
How the 197F thumbturn inside differs from the 197F-1/4 key cylinder inside
The 197F and the 197F-1/4 are both outswinging flat-strike jimmy-proof deadlocks built on the same body. The difference is the interior operating mechanism. The 197F has a thumbturn on the interior face: the occupant inside can lock or unlock the vertical bolt with a 90-degree thumb turn without needing a key. The 197F-1/4 has a fixed 3-pin brass cylinder on the interior, making it a double-cylinder deadlock where a key is required from both sides.
The 197F is the correct specification when interior egress from the space must be possible without a key. Apartment entry doors, store entries, and any outswinging door where the occupant needs to operate the deadbolt from inside without carrying a key are appropriate applications for the 197F thumbturn configuration. The 197F-1/4 double-cylinder configuration applies when interior key control is also required, such as on glass panel doors where a thumbturn reachable from outside through a broken panel would compromise the deadlock. For the double-cylinder outswinging version, the Accentra Yale 197F-1/4 jimmy-proof deadlock is also stocked. For the full range of auxiliary deadbolts, the auxiliary deadbolts section covers the available options.
Why the flat strike is required on outswinging jimmy-proof deadlocks
The standard Yale 197 Series and 197-1/4 Series use an interlocking staple strike designed for inswinging doors, where the door face is flush with the interior frame and the strike can be positioned in the normal relationship to the bolt housing. On outswinging doors, the door geometry reverses: the door swings away from the frame rather than into it, and the standard interlocking strike will not align correctly with the bolt path.
The flat strike on the 197F is designed for this reversed geometry, allowing the vertical bolts to engage the strike accurately on a door that swings outward. Outswinging doors appear on commercial storefronts, exterior entries subject to wind loading requirements, some apartment entry configurations, and exterior utility doors. Using the inswing 197 Series model on an outswinging door will result in a misaligned fit between the bolt housing and the strike. The 197F is the outswinging thumbturn version; the 197 is the inswinging thumbturn version. For the inswinging thumbturn version of this deadlock, the Accentra Yale 197 Series jimmy-proof deadlock is stocked.
Material, finish, backset, and installation details for the Yale 197F
The 197F case is zinc alloy with a sprayed brass finish as the only available option. The backset is 2-3/8 inches. Door thickness compatibility is 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/4 inches, covering thin residential door stock, standard hollow metal commercial doors, and heavier solid core commercial doors. The 5-pin 1109E rim cylinder on the exterior determines the key profile and can be rekeyed or added to an existing master key system at the time of installation.
For key blanks and cylinders compatible with the Yale 1109E rim cylinder used on this deadlock, the cylinders, cores, and keys section covers the available options. For the full commercial lock and hardware range at American Locksets, browse the commercial locks section.
Confirm the door swings outward before ordering the 197F. Sprayed brass finish only. Two keys included. For outswinging doors requiring key interior operation, order the 197F-1/4.
