About this item
The Hager 3540 is a Grade 2 privacy leverset built to ANSI function F76, designed for restrooms, changing rooms, private offices, and single-occupancy spaces in commercial and light institutional buildings. The inside push button locks the outside lever. Three things release that locked state: using the emergency outside release slot, rotating the inside lever, or closing the door. The inside lever is always free for egress. Certified to BHMA ANSI A156.2 Grade 2, UL and cUL listed for 3-hour A label fire doors, ADA compliant per ANSI A117.1, and rated to ANSI A250.13 for severe windstorm resistance.
How ANSI F76 privacy function works on the Hager 3540
Privacy function on the 3540 operates through the inside push button. Pressing the button locks the outside lever immediately, and the lever then rotates freely without retracting the latch. Three separate mechanisms release that lockout state. Rotating the inside lever simultaneously retracts the latch and releases the button. Closing the door resets the button mechanically through the latch contact with the strike. The emergency outside release slot allows a building manager or maintenance staff to release the lockout from outside using a coin or thin tool, which is the code-required override for occupied-room privacy functions.
The emergency release distinguishes privacy function from storeroom function at the installation level. Storeroom function requires a key from outside under all conditions. Privacy function allows a tool-based override without a key, making it appropriate for restrooms and hotel rooms where emergency access must be possible by anyone with a coin rather than only key holders. The inside lever is always free regardless of the push button state, which satisfies egress requirements on all applicable occupancy types.
Construction and certification details that separate the 3540 from basic Grade 2 locks
The 3540 carries the same full certification stack as the rest of the Hager 3500 Series. The ANSI A250.13 severe windstorm resistant component certification covers structural integrity under high-wind pressure differentials and debris impact, which is required on door hardware schedules for commercial projects in wind-hazard zones. The dual UL pressure ratings cover both UL10C positive pressure and UL10B neutral pressure fire door assembly conditions, which is a broader fire door compatibility range than locks carrying only the neutral pressure rating.
The lock chassis is heavy gauge steel, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance. Exposed trim is wrought brass, bronze, and stainless steel with zinc-based components. The 3-3/8" rose is a standard commercial diameter. The 1/2" stainless steel latchbolt is deadlocking, meaning it pins in place when the door is fully closed to prevent shimming or card attacks from the door edge gap. Door thickness range extends from 1-3/8" to 2", which is wider than the 1-3/4" maximum common on many Grade 2 leversets and accommodates thicker commercial hollow metal and solid wood door constructions.
Lever styles, finishes, and where the 3540 fits in the Hager 3500 Series
Three lever styles are available: Archer (ARC), August (AUG), and Withnell (WTN). Finishes are US26D satin chrome and US10B oil rubbed bronze. Backset is 2-3/4" standard with a 2-3/8" option available. The 2-1/4" x 1-1/8" faceplate fits the 2-3/4" backset and the 2-1/4" x 1" faceplate fits the 2-3/8" backset. The 3935 ASA 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" strike ships standard. Door prep requires a 2-1/8" cross bore and 1" edge bore, which is the standard cylindrical lock preparation for commercial doors.
Within the Hager 3500 Series, the 3540 is the privacy function model. The 3510 is passage, the 3553 is entry, the 3570 is classroom, and the 3580 is storeroom, all sharing the same lever styles and finishes for consistent hardware across multiple door types in the same building. Browse the complete Hager 3500 Series Grade 2 for all functions available in this platform. For Grade 1 options in the same Hager lever line, the Hager lever locks section covers both grades. The full selection of cylindrical lever locks across all brands is available for comparison.
Select your lever style, finish, and backset when ordering. Confirm door thickness falls within 1-3/8" to 2" before specifying the 3540.
