Precision 2703 Apex Wood Door CVR Exit Device, Key Retracts Latchbolt - Wide Stile

The Precision 2703 is the wide stile Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) exit device in Precision's 2700 Series, engineered specifically for wood doors. The distinction matters immediately: this is not a standard CVR device adapted for wood construction. The 2700 Series is a dedicated wood door CVR line with an adjustable rod system, wood-door-specific lock stile assembly, and the S519 top strike - the correct strike for vertical rod engagement at the door frame header, not the S300 surface rim strike used on 2103 rim devices.

The rods run inside the wood door stile, concealed. From outside, the door face shows the touchbar and device body with no exposed vertical rod hardware. The latch engages in two places - top of the door frame (header) and floor - simultaneously when the touchbar is pushed from inside. Outside entry uses a key: key in the outside cylinder, turn it, the top latchbolt retracts, the door pulls open.

Why CVR Over SVR on a Wood Door

Surface Vertical Rod (SVR, 2200 Series) devices are visible on the door face - rods run up and down the door surface from the device body to the top and bottom latches. SVR works on any door type and installs straightforwardly. For architectural wood doors in lobbies, executive offices, conference centers, educational facilities, and healthcare buildings where the door's appearance matters, surface rods on a wood door face are visually intrusive and may conflict with the door design specification.

The 2703 CVR puts the rods inside the wood door stile, invisible. The door exterior looks like a standard exit device installation - touchbar, device body - without two metal rods running the full door height. This is the specification when a wood door needs two-point panic egress hardware and a clean exterior appearance is required by the design or hardware schedule.

The concealed rod installation in wood requires specific door preparation. The 2700 Series accounts for this with an adjustable top rod that accommodates 6'-8" to 8'-0" or 8'-1" to 10'-0" door height ranges, plus additional fine-tune adjustment through the lock front filler. Top and Bottom Latch: Two-Point Engagement

Like all CVR and SVR devices, the 2703 latches at two points. The top latchbolt is 3/4-inch throw stainless steel with a deadlocking plunger - same specification as the Apex 2000 rim and SVR devices. It engages the S519 Investment Cast Stainless Steel surface-applied top strike in the door frame header. The bottom bolt is 5/8-inch throw steel plated with independent action and a 3/4-inch door undercut adjustment range, engaging the S460 flush-mounted steel floor strike.

Two-point latching on a wood door provides structural advantages beyond security. Wood doors are more susceptible to warping, swelling, and dimensional change from humidity and temperature variation than hollow metal. A single top rim latch that loses alignment with its keeper is an out-of-service door. Top and bottom latching on the CVR maintains engagement even when a wood door has shifted within its frame.

2703 vs 2103: CVR vs Rim on the Same Application

The 2103 wide stile rim device and the 2703 wide stile CVR device both handle the same door width (36" or 48") and both provide panic egress with keyed outside entry. The choice between them is security and appearance.

Single rim latch (2103) is sufficient on standard commercial doors with solid hollow metal or hardwood frames at normal heights. Two-point CVR latching (2703) is specified when the door height, door material, or security requirement justifies the additional bottom latch engagement - and when the door's aesthetic requires the concealed rod profile over the surface rod alternative.
