Precision FL2800 (FL2803) Apex Fire Rated Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device - Wide Stile

The Precision FL2800 Series is the fire-rated Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) exit device for wide stile metal doors. The base SKU is FL2803 - function "03," Key Retracts Latchbolt - with the full FL2801 through FL2815 function range field-selectable from the same device body. Two things separate this device from every other fire-rated exit device in the Precision Apex lineup: the vertical rods run concealed inside the metal door stile (not on the door face), and this device is available in 12-foot door heights - making it the only fire-rated Precision Apex exit device in this catalog that covers 12-foot metal door applications.

FL2800 vs FL2203: CVR vs SVR on Fire-Rated Doors

The FL2203 fire-rated SVR (Surface Vertical Rod) device routes vertical rods on the door face, visible from either side. The FL2800 fire-rated CVR routes vertical rods inside the metal door stile, invisible from the door exterior. From the outside, the FL2800-equipped door shows the touchbar assembly and device body only - no vertical rod hardware running up and down the face of the door.

For architectural fire-rated metal doors in lobbies, executive corridors, healthcare facilities, and institutional buildings where the door design is a specification point and surface rod hardware conflicts with the aesthetic or design intent, the FL2800 CVR is the correct specification. Both devices provide two-point panic egress latching - top latch in the frame header, bottom bolt in the floor - and both carry UL fire exit hardware listings. The difference is entirely in the exterior appearance and the rod routing method.

12-Foot Door Height: What the FL2800 Covers That FL2203 Doesn't

The FL2203 fire-rated SVR device is available in 7, 8, and 10-foot door heights only. The 12-foot height is not available on the fire-rated SVR configuration. The FL2800 fire-rated CVR device is available in 7, 8, 10, and 12-foot door heights.

For commercial buildings with 12-foot metal doors on fire-rated corridors - tall warehouse corridors, large institutional hallways, high-bay manufacturing facilities with fire-rated egress - the FL2800 is the Precision fire-rated exit device that covers the full door height while concealing the vertical rod hardware. Confirm the door height before ordering between these two models.

Metal Doors Only

The FL2800 is engineered for metal door applications - hollow metal and similar metal door stile construction where the CVR rods can be routed through the stile cavity. It is not for wood doors. The Precision 2700 Series is the CVR device for wood door applications, though that series is not fire-rated.

Center Chassis: Post-Installation Latch Adjustment

The FL2800 includes a center chassis assembly with a heavy wrought steel construction and lock-in-place Top and Bottom Latch Adjustors. These adjustors are accessible through the door after installation - alignment corrections to both latch points can be made without removing the device from the door. On fire-rated door assemblies where latch alignment is a code compliance issue, the ability to fine-tune both latch positions after installation through the door face eliminates reinstallation labor when alignment problems are discovered during inspection.

The top rod is adjustable from 6'-8" to 8'-0" or from 8'-1" to 10'-0" at the time of installation, with additional fine adjustment through the lock front filler. This range covers the full height spectrum the device serves.

No Dogging on a Fire-Rated Device

The FL2800 is fire-rated. Per NFPA 80, labeled fire doors must self-close and positively latch on every cycle. Mechanical dogging is not permitted. The device ships without a dogging mechanism. The Precision CDK Cylinder Dogging Kit listed in Parts and Accessories is not applicable to this fire-rated device - it is included in the accessories section generically but cannot legally be used on a fire-rated door. Confirm with the AHJ if there is any question about dogging on a specific fire-labeled opening.
